Why when I went to register on LinkShare to sell my bands music did it ask me for my SSN?

That doesn't seem right to me.

Not sure about that one, I wouldn't give out that info though.
Maybe they report taxes or something, but still...

I got all of my bands music into iTunes and just about every other online service by going thru CDBaby. It works very well and we sell a lot of music that way. Definitely worth doing.

It's not crazy. Anytime business to business transactions are completed, a Tax ID number is required. If you are just an independent contractor (no LLC or anything like that) then your Tax ID number is your SSN. That way, if you make $10,000 in sales, the IRS knows it, and will make sure you pay your taxes. Don't blame Linkshare. Blame the IRS.

Often times, if you elect for direct deposit into a bank account, they don't need your SSN because Linkshare (or CDbaby, or whoever) can just write the transaction to that account, and your SSN is attached to that account.

But anytime you elect to have a check cut directly to you, you should be asked for your SSN. If you don't get asked, then be wary.

Think of it this way. Your album sells 1000 copies for $10. Itunes cuts a check to Linkshare for $10,000. Let's say Linkshare then cuts you a check for $7000. Linkshare makes $3000. Linkshare has to pay taxes on that $3000.

But the IRS will say "Mr. Linkshare, it shows here you made $10,000. Why did you only pay us taxes on $3000?"

Mr. Linkshare replies "Because I had to pay this other guy $7000 off that."

IRS: "Which guy? Who?"

Mr. Linkshare: "Some guy in Wichita. Not sure. Here's the address we mailed the check to."

IRS: "So you didn't collect Tax ID info from the mystery Wichita man? Sounds like a tax scam to me. See you in court. And in the meantime, we are seizing all of your assets. Have a nice day!"

LinkShare is for website owners. It's affiliate marketing links/products.

Use CDBaby - that is the only trusted way to sell music on the Internet IMO.
