Hey, I'm looking for a new MP3 player and have some features that need covering:
- At least 30-40 gig HD, I like a lot of music.
- I don't mind it playing video, this would be useful, but I don't want a big breakable shiny screen - the iPod 80gig is a perfect example of the size and construction I'm looking for
- I will be in South-East Asia and need to be able to charge it up, I have heard of people saying you can't even charge it in the UK from the mains, it needs USB - is this true? Will iPod charge in Asia?
Basically the 80gig iPod is perfect for what I need, its just I would like something media player compatible if possible, and it would be cool to have something different to everyone else I know - the Microsoft Zune is very appealing, is there any reason I shouldn't get one off ebay? Will it work over here?
You'd have thought there would be more competition for high-capacity MP3 players, but creative have nothing.. Only one 32gig model at £249.00
So yeah, there are the features, again the most important thing is that I can use and charge it in South East Asia, and that it's not real delicate..
Thanks!

If reliability is an issue, I would avoid hard disk based players totally. Hard drives are not meant to be bounced around in small portable devices. 32GB flash based players are on the market now, and those would be a good choice.
yeah flash. hard drives are obsolete

Yes, flash drive is better. Almost all players charge through the USB-port, so if you don't have access to a computer while travelling, you'll need a mains to USB converter, but they're cheap so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
If you're going to places without electricity like the jungle or Everest, you'll need a battery powered player like an iRiver T60.

+1.
Go play with an iPod touch and tell us that it doesn't assrape the Zune in every aspect.
I would have recommended the 80GB iPod by far. I've had Zunes, and they're unreliable and extremely finicky. I used to be a complete Apple hater.
Then I got an iPod and realized I had just been being a biased jackass for two years.

There is no issue for charging because you can easily found electronic adapter which have USB pin and can be charge from electricity.
If you are planning to Asia than I would advice you to go for cheap Mp3 players. Talking costly one in tour is really risky one. Just try some Transcend product ... this have descend sound and quality as well.
But I do not think that they came with 40 GB space ... 40 GB = 8000 tracks almost (5 MB per track) and to listen 8000 tracks you need 40000 minutes almost 5 mints per tracks. Thats really huge ... and to select your favourite one that will be time consuming as well.

- My co-worker has a Zune 8gig flash drive player and when dabbling with it, the only thing I really noticed was that the screen was a bit bigger than the ipod my other co-worker has. Other than that, Zune IMO got into the market way too late to even compete w/ ipod. With all the things that are out for IPOD (3rd-party applications, accessories, etc.), I think MS really missed the boat on this one...

My experience is the opposite. I love Apple products. I have a MacPro, a MacbookPro, an iPod and an iPhone. I still don't like the iPod. I thought the Zune was much easier to navigate. I'm just not a fan of the click wheel.

Well I think Apple is best option if you want to have quality but however use Bose headphone instead of Apple one if you want to have good quality of music. I do not prefer apple ear plus at all.

No lie. I had a pair of Shures stolen and didn't want to shell out the cash to replace them so I compromised by picking up a pair of Bose earbuds, their fancy $100 ones. Absolute shit. I returned them the same day. I was baffled at how they could charge that much money for them and fail so miserably to produce balanced sound. That and they were incredibly inefficient (read lacking in volume). My 5 year old $39 Sonys put them to shame.
