can you use a firewire to plug an 8mm camcorder into a computer to where i would be able to edit videos?

Well there's Video 8, Hi-8 and Digital 8, and only the last one can be connected directly with firewire. All Digital 8 (and DV) cameras I've seen have a firewire connection.
For the non-digital cameras, which is probably what you've got, to connect with firewire you need an analogue to digital converter. The Sony DVMC-DA2 is one, and Dazzle makes another one. They're not all that cheap, a few hundred dollars.
Some Digital video cameras also have the conversion function built in.
