So my wife has been saying we should replace our ancient washer & dryer before they croak and we have to panic shop. Did I listen? You can guess the answer.
Any tips, advice, warnings, or pity? I'm in the USA if that matters. Thanks.

Yes, panic shopping is to be avoided. I had to do that recently with a water heater.
I swear by the front-loading washing machines. They used to be less common in the US, but you find them more easily now.

We bought a Bosch dryer a few years ago. It has never given the slightest hint of trouble and gets a lot of use due to our inclement weather. They're German but they should be available in the U.S. The Mercedes of dryers, one might say.

We bought a Kenmore (Sears) front loader set, made by Whirlpool. OK so far. :thu:

I checked, our washing and dryer are Kenmore---both front loading. They must be about five years old, I think, and they're running very well. The dryer is gas powered. I didn't choose them (the previous owners bought them), but I'm happy with them.
I actually had a Bosch before, and I'm very happy with them, too. They can be pricey, but usually justifiably so. We have a Bosch dishwasher (also came with the house when we moved in)----it's the best I've ever seen. Super quiet. Cleans very well without having to put in loads of detergent and chemical.
