My parents want to upgrade their TV. Nothing too fancy. Around $1k.
32" - 42"
HD

Looking for a good rating, simplicity, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The 720P plasmas are real bargains. With a 42" screen you're going to be able to see little if any difference between 720P and 1080P. Panasonic, Samsung & Vizio are good brands. You can find good deals on LCDs too, and if you really want an LCD, just about any of the major brands are ok. You can definitely find a good 42" flatpanel tv for less than $1000.

Buy Plasma! The only reason they are cheaper is because there are more companies making the "board" that goes inside them now. When they 1st hit the market , there were some that went for a ridiculous $10K! Now that patent has run out on the boards and there are numerous companies that make them. Now the same goes for LCD. There are a handful of companies that make the board and that is the ONLY reason they cost more. The Plasma has a much better picture BY FAR anyway.

This weekend I picked up a Samsung 530 series 40" LCD with 5 year extended warrantee from Sears for $1040 out the door. I really had my heart set on a 46" TV, but it would have been $500 more for that model (actually $200 more for that model, and $300 more for that model's extended warrantee).

While I am very happy with the screen, the built in speakers suck. So badly that I just started a thread asking for advice on what to rout my audio to.

If possible you should really look into Costco, they extend the warranty to two full years. I hear mixed things but the Vizios I've seen are actually decent. I have a Sony 52" 1080i 120mhz LCD from Best Buy, it was a good deal with no interest for 3 years, so I got it. Samsungs are also great!

Panasonic is an old name in the techy biz. But they hit a grand slam with there Plasma TV line. Highest consumer reviews on a lot of sites.
Personally I have the 50" Panasonic Plasma. AMAZING HD picture. When you watch football on it you can literally see the damn blades of grass. Im sorry, but an LCD picture is just not good enough for that....

I got a Toshiba Regza 42" 1080 for under a grand.

If there is a Circuit City still standing in your area, you could get one there for a steal.

I can see blades of grass and insects crawling on the fricken floor on my Sony LCD. If you do go LCD, you just need to make sure you get at least a 120mhz one, otherwise you may get a little pixelation on fast motion shots. It really is funny how fickle we've all gotten, I remember looking at an old Zenith 26 inch tube set in wonder when I was a kid, with Rabbit ears and some clicking gizmo that would find signals!? Man we're spoiled!

Both Vizio and Pioneer in the past week have announced that they have dropped plasma, as they consider it a pretty much dead technology, with OLED and LED backlit LCD both coming in the near future. Apparently Pioneer has lost a LOT of money on plasma tv sales. I do agree that in some situations plasma looks better but if you have a bright room plasma can suffer because of glare on the screen. A buddy of mine has a Panasonic plasma and it looks amazing.

I have a 42" Toshiba LCD which I am very happy with, 1080P, 4 HDMI inputs as well as component and composite inputs, just a nice tv. It also has TruSound, which limits the volume on commercials so they don't come across as a lot louder than the tv program you are watching.

Whatever you decide on, make sure you go play around with it a little bit at a shop before you buy. I have a little 19" Sanyo cheapie in the bedroom basically just to watch news on, and it's fine, but it has so few adjustment features in it, and it's a pain to program stations into it, you can't put them in manually, that if I had it to do over again I'd buy something different even though honestly the picture on it is great. There are lots of good looking tv's out there right now, and the prices have come down a bunch in the last year or so.

all i heard on the radio this morning
was that PIONEER has the bext LCD televisions..
I know zero about LCD Teles.

But I also heard they are either Out of Business
or going out of business...Not sure if PIONEER LCD
Teles are still available, they just said they got very
high marks on their LCD line

It's not LCD, it's Plasma that Pioneer is getting out of, your radio station needs to learn to read.... It's all over the front page of AVS forum the last couple days.... That said, if you have the money, the Pioneer Kuro is a fantastic tv, top ratings. I don't know if they are worth the extra money over a Panasonic plasma, though. To my eyes the Panasonic is equally good but quite a bit less expensive. If plasma is your thing, Panasonic is the way to go. I still prefer my Toshiba Regza 42" LCD, but my room is really bright and has a huge picture window in it, so plasma was not a real option for me.

I got a Samsung 32" Series 4 telly and it's a great TV. The picture is good and I used it everyday almost non-stop and it's giving me no problems. It seems it's the best LCD TV (http://www.smartratings.com/electronics/plasma_and_lcds/472) right now if you listen to what the others say.

IDK if LCD isn't "good enough" for that but, I have a 50" Panasonic Viera and my God, man...the picture is spooge-worthy. Best picture I've ever seen in a TV.
