We're going to start giving away free CDs at our shows, and only at our shows. We have other stuff we sell like shirts, posters, etc., at the shows too.
The CDs can be paid for online, stores, download, but only at our shows can you get a free one.

Are they just not selling? Why would you give it away for free? If they are paying to get into the show, and dig the music, to the point they are buying merchandise, why wouldn't they buy the CD? IF you are having trouble moving them at shows, and other merchandise, try out a package deal, like buy CD, get a shirt and a sticker free.

Marketing tool to get them to come to shows and join our mailing list. Then I up sell them other stuff. In the end, I make more money and get more people coming to shows. Win-Win for everyone.

If you can get your per-unit cost low enough, and if the move boosts your attendance, this is a darn good idea! Thanks!

I often give away free 2 song promo CD's of tracks recorded in my home studio. They sound very good and have earned me a lot of fans.
Go for it!

We do this to just in a paper or cardstock sleeve with all the great contact info and stuff printed on it, and usually stuff them with a few stickers too. The fans love them, cuz we'll change the songs every so often or put different versions of popular songs on it.

While I kind of understand the tactic, I tend to think that the good old fashioned method of having a good band that puts on a good show that people can't wait to see next time is a better and more cost effective method.
Whenever a band has a mailing list, it just seems so desperate to me. If I really like the music, I don't need to be emailed to be reminded when they are playing!

What works for some doesn't always work for others. As I've said before, each genre has it's own protocol.

This has worked in the past for band on my label. We record different live shows, works great.

That seems like a very good idea for getting people to your shows. But aren't the ones coming to the shows generally fans already? If it is working though.. awesome

Your goal should be getting them in the hands of people who have never been to your show.

Absolutely. We distributed over 10,000 copies of a four song ep last summer. They cost almost nothing to make and the response you get is amazing. Those CDs do more for you when they are in the peoples hands. They don't do anybody any good if they are sitting in a box in the back of your van at the end of the night.
