I picked a random band (Chimaira) and searched for their trademark information. They have 2 trademarks in the following categories:

IC 025. US 022 039. G & S: t-shirts, sweatshirts, hooded shirts, tank tops, belts, wind resistant jackets.

IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: entertainment services, namely, live performances by a musical group.

What does this protect (mainly in the first category)?

If someone were to goto one of those shirt making places, make a shirt in a random font with the word "Chimaira", would that be infringing the trademark?

Because the name of the band is unusual and not a common everyday word, the case could certainly be made that it is infringing.

If you made a t-shirt with BOSTON in a random font on the front, you probably would not be in any danger of being sued by Tom Scholz since this is a well known city in the USA.

OTOH, the word "heart" is a common English word but if you put it on a shirt front in a stylized logo as shown in Trademark Serial Number 73115391, you would certainly be infringing...

Each case has to be reviewed as to the details...
