A friend speculated that it could be Godzilla, seeing how the viral videos involve a Japanese softdrink company and their "secret" lab.

just came back from the watching it. You could've put a spoiler tag on that:cop:

My opinion: the movie lacked. It was one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen. I bought into the hype and maybe expected too much. But shit, if they're going to give us such a teaser a year earlier and it ends up being this shitty, it's a slap in the face.
Also, I thought cool, there aren't going to be any big-name actors in this movie. Oh well, it's even worse to have these rich kids (a la 'The Hills') running around screaming at each other. I admit though, it's pretty interesting not having any background music.
One thing's for sure though: I'm done with these shaky camera movies. Fucking headache from the middle to the end. I admit, I should've seen it coming but still, NO ONE is that BAD at cam-cording in reality!!!
The monster I thought was terrifically horrifying though. I liked how they didn't show the monster in its entirety for a while. The special effects were great, too. 1.5/5 for me. They could have explained where the fuck the monster came from, etc too. But I think a sequel for this makes sense though, but it'll have to be a 'real movie' so to speak. Too many questions and not enough good mystery to compensate for that.

I saw it yesterday and must say I lost 10 bucks...

My friends and I nearly vomit and had hot "attacks" after 45 min. I think I watched 75% of the whole movie because of the motion sickness...so be warned DON'T SIT IN THE FRONT! Good for realism, but not for the eyes. The acting was very generic too.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

The concept was exciting, but the decisions made by the characters was not very rational and realist (I guess I just called them stupid..). It seems like they did what they did just for keeping them in the city to have more "substance". I'm maybe selfish, but I would not return in the action to "save" my so-called girlfriend that I would lost because I was going to Japan anyway, even maybe for a family member. ESPECIALLY after I just saw that there's a giant monster destroying the city and when the building that you have to go in could fall down at any time...

In that very chaotic and crazy situation there's no freaking way I would shoot with my camera 5 seconds steady the bridge that I'm on being collapsed!!! I would just run my ass off.

I don't really understand why they didn't pick up any weapons after the attack in the subway tunnel too...

And the guy holding the camera has to be the most annoying person I ever seen. I mean could you shut up for at least 3 seconds?!

I don't think the concept worked that well...it was really effective in the Blair Witch Project but in this one it didn't work (for me)...I also don't think the attempt at realism worked...overall, I wasted a couple of hours....JMO

haha you took the words right out of my mouth. My girlfriend actually threw up when she got home hahaha! And yes, the acting was not the best.

***spoiler***

and wtf, when Hud went back to get the camera and got killed by the monster, it didn't make any sense at all. I mean, wouldn't you be able to tell that a 50 story high monster was there breathing down your neck?

I don't think the concept worked that well...it was really effective in the Blair Witch Project but in this one it didn't work (for me)...I also don't think the attempt at realism worked...overall, I wasted a couple of hours....JMO

Exactly. The Blair Witch Project actually looked like it was shot with a real camera, but Cloverfield was just imitating(for lack of a better word).

I gotta admit this flick was a pretty cool ride. The camera stuff was hard to watch at times (even the ticket taker warned me to sit in the back of the theater), the love story was kinda dumb, but I liked that the plot wasn't so nice & tidy in what was going and on what the monster was. I would have thrown my popcorn at the screen if they'd busted out the "Nuclear waste in Japan created it!" scenario.

There were some genuine freaky moments, IMO. I'd definitely recommend it if you like the genre and can handle the Blair Witch camera.

I saw Cloverfield last night and if you want to see a well done monster flick, rent the movie Host. It's a Korean film that actually nailed the "big scary monster from the sea" scenario.

I think the film was fabulous. It was a great, new take on a classic cinema theme. As far as the camera shake which a lot of people complain about, I think it fits because it has a point. I also like that the film has great continuity, it doesn't go outside of the format to answer questions that do not matter, the film is not about the monster, or the destruction of the city, its about the people. I love the ending of the film. I am so tired of watching crap that ends well and everyone lives happily ever after. Life does not end well, life sucks. I love when people have the balls to conclude a movie with everyone dying or really screwed up, because thats how life is.

Yuppies and Gozilla. Yuck. Yes, I saw the movie. The party at the beginning was more horrifying than the monster. "He's your main dude." "I'm your main dude." Puke.

There's a parallel themed movie titled Monster (http://www.theasylum.cc/product.php?id=139) that's just as bad if you can't get enough of this "film" style.

I think Cloverfield was more an experiment with internet buzz than anything else.

That looks like it was done by a 17 year old and a Mac Book Pro.

I thought Cloverfield was pretty riveting. The thing I was most impressed was the effects shots and camera work. Worth my $9.50 :thu:

Just came back from the movies.

I f*cking loved it !!

Yes, the camera guy is annoying as hell... the stupid decision of going after that girl is simply unbeliavable... the party was... ugh... bad acting? you bet... weak story? Indeed ... shacking camera ? f*ck yeah... and were do they sell those wonderful cameras with a battery lasting that long? And... tape? ... maybe it was a hard disk one? ... hell, it DOES record better audio than my Pro Tools rig, BTW.

... So wtf?

Well, I guess I like the first-person perspective... keeping the monster's "identity" in the mystery was a great decision... those little creatures were something I did not expect and they were a horrible-nice surprise... they fact they all simply die and for me, that very final escene when the main couple dies, feels very dramatic. I guess that is the way it is when you die in the middle of a big event like an earthquake, war, explosion... and finally I loved the fact it has no music. And I guess none ever missed background music.

BTW I did not get that dizzy with the camera movements, because given I am a non native english speaker, they add subtitles. So, keeping your eyes in the subtitles forces you to keep your eyes in a fixed point and the effect is less severe.

Most effective sci/fi horror films I have seen in many years. I loved this movie. No stars, no music, no explanations, no war generals or news reporters. Just you thru the eyes of the characters and your imagination- very compelling. Brilliant effort to superimpose the impressive CGI thru the lens of a hand held.

If its not about the monster. Why is it there?:freak:

This will sound pretentious, but I guess you could say that the whole 'big monster invasion' could be read as a physical representation of the emotions that the main guy is going through with his ex-girlfriend-whatever.

You've got two plots unfolding. The man in emotional turmoil is paralleled with a city in turmoil. It's not shakespeare, but a smart way of getting a 'nothing' story to work and to engage the audience.

Pretty crap film though. :) I really had high hopes for this, but all the American horror cliches are in there, thus making it about as scary as an episode of Corination Street.

"Wouldn't it be scary if a flaming tramp came running at us out of the dark?"
Yes. actually that would be. More so than a couple of big insects.

Apparently the sequel is the same event, but filmed from a different characters perspective. This may be just some unjustifed rumour though.

I really liked cloverfield. I was especially grateful that it didn't have a corny hero-saves-the-day ending like most catastrophe movies.

It's possible to last that long for a good battery. Not too many dv tapes are 90 mins though, the majority is 60. I still enjoyed the film though.
