I don't have a Cat# and Lumberjack Mordem(sic) music wants a previous Cat#, before they will distribute our cd. Anyone know of any ones that don't require that or how to obtain a Cat# for a self released ep or full length?

We don't have a label, but we thought about making our own(if that is what is required to get a good or decent distro. We have already submitted our music to torrent site's(some may disagree but we have sold more online merch and have had alot more hits on our myspace page this way.)

Just looking for a little bit of help or info. Sorry if this is stupid or off post

Are you talking about a UPC, Dropped? I'm not sure what a Cat# is...

Do you mean a catalog number? if so just make one up. "Your Label 0001"

If you mean a UPC then cdbaby.com provides them if you agree to sell through their site. You can still sell through other channels, they just want some of way of making up the cost of providing one for free. At least it was free or cheap last I checked. It's the most hassle-free way I know of to get one.

TuneCore also provides them--free. :)

Hey guys thanks for the help And peter shot me some info on the barcode if you will please. Well what we were told is we need a previous catalog number to receive any kind of distro. So i was curious if you just make the number up or does someone assign them?

I know it sounds weird but we have a new cd out as well and we have a new dvd coming out and we want to market it in stores as well instead of just online(so the riaa or whoever) see's the actual sales

We are wanting in store distro mainly and I know you can either buy or establish a deal with a distro company to get in store distro world wide

hi dropped_2_c,

congrats on your cd and dvd! as i understand it, in order to sell a cd or dvd on the open highway (not out of the trunk of your car) through a distributor or retailer you'll need to register for a UPC (Uniform Product Code). this will authenticate your product and enable it to be tracked. but if you don't want to sell your items through a reseller, and would find numbers helpful for your own internal tracking purposes, you can make up any kind of code or numbers you'd like.

it seems that if you've already chosen to work with a distributor that the best all-inclusive (easy) way to go is to work with someone like tunecore or cdbaby that provides the service for you. but there are a lot of hits on google on how to obtain a upc. ball's in your court. :)
