As far as selling music from a digital player, is snocap the only option? Is there a better option out there?
Thanks guys,

Apparently, the company is in danger of folding, so unless they can find a buyer, it doesn't look like it'll be an option for too much longer.

hell no dude. there are a couple great options out there.
1. if you have a physical CD, you can put it up at CD Baby (here's their digital info... http://cdbaby.net/dd who'll set you up with iTunes, emusic, amazon, napster...bla, bla bla and use their digital setup. they'll take a cut, but you can probably get that for free to start or a cheep set up.
2. if you don't have a physical CD and just want to get your tunes up on itunes, emusic... go to http://www.tunecore.com/. you'll pay for your tune to be put up (which isn't much), but you won't have to give them a little cut of each track sold like CD Baby does.
We used CD Baby for our CD Nooner, but we might give tunecore a shot. they didn't exist when we put our first CD out
good luck.

We're in the office and taking all calls, Woodcs. I've no idea how you're not getting through. Tried writing support@tunecore.com? They WILL answer during regular hours. Heck, they often answer outside of hours, it's a great and dedicated team. Sorry for any delays! No one falls through the cracks if we can every help it.

Sounclick would be my choice. Listen to my songs on soundclick then scroll down and listen to it on Snocap.
www.sugarlimeblue.com/snocap.htm
To me the snocap sounds like someone put a blanket over their speakers. They download fine though....At least I think so.
It took about 5 minutes to set up, songs are instantly available, and you tak 70% instead of 60%

hmmm...actually didn't know sound click was still around. i know that they used to just be a thing where you could put your tracks up online for streaming, but they didn't used to have a way to purchase them. i think you can put up you tracks where ever you want or feel comfortable selling them. the only difference is that places like iTunes, eMusic and those types of places just seem more professional as you're listed up there with lots of big named bands.
addressing the "blanket thing"... when you set the player volumes to both all the way up, they sound the same on my computer. my snocap default volume was set really low, and the soundclick one was maxed out.
we've had snocap on our myspace page now since it was first available, and i really don't think we've sold all that many through there, we've sold some, but nothing that compares to those other bigger named places like iTunes, eMusic, Napster.... for some reason, i think people are a little hesitant to purchase from those little places.

I think they have slightly different purposes, but I would use all of them. There's so much competition over online marketing space now. It's really beneficial to have all three working in your favor.

Ha, proof that it's just not working out. How could anyone trust a company that was founded by the same person who founded NAPSTER??

ah, that's unfortunate. Snocap has been doing very well for us in conjunction with myspace. At least as well as iTunes, etc...
checking out/setting up at Indistr- looks interesting

Please feel free to set up an account through INDISTR. What's the loss? You keep your music rights, and it's free to use!
As far as we know, we're the only independent digital distributor that you could be eating lunch with the revenues you've made from that same mornings music sales! Pretty awesome, isn't it?
Come join, and please feel free to leave me your feedback.

thanks Kevin, got it all set up.
First impression; very easy/smooth setup. No problems there. Nice
doesn't allow much info on artist, but I guess that's what the homesite link is for. Also curious if there's a 'browse artist' feature? That's always a plus I find.
Looking good so far! Will try to send some folks over to check it out.
thanks again

I'm glad you liked the set-up for your INDISTR account. Unfortunately, we don't have a search by genre feature(if that's what you were thinking) but you can tag your music as much as you'd like for it to be available in the search engine.
I appreciate you want to spread the word. It means a lot to us, the more artists, the more money we have to advertise with!
Also, feel free to click on "share song" link and place the embeddable player ALL OVER the internet to your liking. You can even put it on your MySpace page. This embeddable will allow you to stream 30 seconds of each song. It's a great feature to draw artists to your profile page so they can purchase your music.
Best of luck!
Kevin
www.blastmymusic.com (http://www.blastmymusic.com) is another site that has a music selling widget.

The best thing about cdbaby is that full online distribution to a truckload of sites is included when you sign up for CD fullfillment, including iTunes. So you don't have to do any administration yourself. You can get info on all the downloads through your cdbaby account. They pay you when it reaches $25, I think.
Of course, they take a small cut for this - but the exposure is really broad and totally worth it. And I think Derek Sivers is really one of those guys out there who is trying to figure out new ways to help musicians get their music heard.
Then on top of that - use whatever else you think will help.

Hi Colin,
I would say it depends on what you are looking for, each widget and white label option is a little bit different. Some are geared toward specific genres, such as hoooka.com for rock and beatportplayer.com for electronic music.
My favorite alternative to the Snocap MyStore is Indie911's Hoooka (www.hoooka.com). Hoooka also does video which is pretty cool..
You should also check out blastmymusic.com, which someone else here mentioned.
For a more integrated back end white label solution, check out DMS: http://www.digitalmusicshops.com/
If you have your music available at Beatport already, then check out beatportplayer.com. It's actually a fancy playable widget that redirects you to your music page on Beatport, but hey it serves a purpose.
That should get you started. Just note that white label retail companies are very different in what they offer and the price points you'll be able to negotiate. I've also seen a lot of white label options fold (and not just Snocap being bought out by iMeem, but many stores before that!). Do your homework, and if you're still not finding the right store, come back and ask questions in the forum...

Has anyone used the "browse artist" feature on iTunes or any other store to make purchases of music of artists that they previously never heard of? Or slightly heard of?
I don't think browse by artist functions lead to increased sales. Features in a genre category, such as "iTunes staff picks" or something like that - yes, that leads to increased traffic and sales. But I can't think of any purchases I made by logging on to iTunes and then randomly browsing through the online genre "bins" looking for something unknown to purchase...
Anyone have anything to add to this? What's your experience?

Well, let me qualify my response with this:
- I don't use iTunes
- I get my music through a Napster ToGo subscription
- Because of the subscription, I don't have to purchase music, I rent it.
That said, I browse by genre pretty often. I'm a blues fan. And I typically search by genre and by location when I get the urge to listen to up-and-coming artists. I like to hear new bands that play in my area. And I like to know who is considered the best in the genre at the various online music sites. So charts are very nice as well.
Edit: You said "browse by artist" and I misread it as "browse by genre", my bad.
But you are probably right. Most of the time, I'll hear about a new album from another source (a friend, an ezine, a forum) and go online to listen to it as soon as it comes out. A good example of this happened the other day. I really like this guy James Hunter from over in the UK. I signed up on his mailing list and got an email the other day that his new album will be available in the US in a couple weeks. So I'll be going online very soon to checkout and download the new album on Napster as soon as it's available.
Also, as a musician, I will often search for versions or covers of songs that I'm going to play in my setlist to hear different renditions. I take elements from the versions I like and incorporate it into our show. The acapella intro to "Mama Talk To Your Daughter" by Magic Sam is an example of this.
