Stars Kirk Douglas...WW1 movie made in the '50s.
I'm kinda curious if the scene in the movie where the French General slaps the soldier in the trenches was lifted from the real-life General Patton slapping incident during WW2.
All in all, an excellent flick with some great acting by Douglas and others.

Don't know, but it was filmed not long after WWII so maybe.
That scene almost at the end with the refugee girl singing to the hardened soldiers in the canteen is one of the all-time great scenes in moviedom.
Yes, I've heard people debate the meaning of that scene. I think the point of it was to show that the girl and the soldiers are one in the same--and that's symbolized by them all singing together. She is a prison of war to the French and the French soldiers are prisoners being held captive by their own army--which is more than happy to destroy them at a moment's notice.

Agreed, great movie. I thought the scene where the tiles on the floor became a chessboard, and the soldiers were just pawns, was visual eloquence at its best.

One of my all time favorite films, Kubrick or otherwise.
If you are into war dramas its a MUST see.
Not a labored scene in the movie. Perfect.
