The original was on TV last night. It was shorter and had a different ending. And Ben Wade was nicer.

FWIW, Christian Bale is becoming my favorite actor. While every actor makes a clunker or two, Bale has chosen some pretty good and diverse roles. I would also recommend Rescue Dawn.

The only way this movie works for me is if in the final minutes of the movie it's revealed that Ben Wade is Satan or some other supernatural figment ala High Plains Drifter or Pale Rider. Otherwise, to me the level of bullet-dodging invincibility pushed the action beyond credibility.

So, imo, good direction, great acting, but an unbelievably stupid story.

+1, it was a great ride. Just horrible writing. More people died trying to get Wade to the train than he probably killed himself.

To which I'll add...

A worn-out premise, and a very predictable storyline....been done (it seems) about two hundred times over the years.

Just waaaaaaayy too many stupid things were done in this move.

When the group is camping in 'hostile injun' country, they are fired upon by several Comanches or Apaches, whatever. The dumb-a$$es scatter for a few moments then, incredibly stupid move, they all run back to the campfire......where they're lit up like the stupid, easy-meat targets they make of themselves....and what the heck are they doing with a campfire out there that can be seen for twenty miles by those who want very much to find them and kill them?

When the 'good guys' are holed-up in a town's hotel on the second floor, and the gangleader's gang show up in the street below to rescue him and prevent the good guys from putting him on the train, they completely miss the opportunity to easily just shoot at least half of the gang below right off their horses (there were only seven of the crooks altogether anyway, and maybe thirty to fifty feet away from the hotel windows) and in one fell swoop give themselves what would have been an overwhelming advantage of numbers.

There's way more very stupid things that go on in this over-hyped formula western.

It cost $3.05 to rent it, including a $1.00 'early return' credit, but to me, it wasn't even worth that.

I didn't enjoy the flick at all, but I thought crowe actually did a good job with the character - the pace was uneven as hell, the ending was , and I kept checking my watch in the theater during the last 30 minutes or so - the dude who was crowe's right hand baddie was super awful and miscast too

my favorite (somewhat recent) films in terms of performances, pacing, and direction were no country for old men and fracture - now fracture was really far fetched in a lot of ways too, but it was paced very well and engaging throughout, plus the performances were pretty darn decent

The characters act they way people act when a screenplay has been written for them, not the way they act in real life. Overrated, boring movie.

I liked it, but yeah, the ending was far-fetched and harmed the movie.

Ya know, you got a good point there. However, the movie is obviously supposed to be a little exaggerated like most great westerns are. They're kind of a 'fairy tale' that just happens to take place in a familiar historical time frame. They don't just sniper dudes like that because there wouldn't be any honor or courage in it, and that's kinda the whole point of the movie - Dan Evans (Christian Bale) finding honor and courage! I thought it was a pretty lyrical movie, with good atmosphere. Not really mindblowing or anything, but pretty damn good...

I highly suggest 'Once Upon A Time In The West' as well. A classic old film, but it still has alot of sweeping and somehow timeless beauty to it.
