I just polished off season 2 of Rome, and what a masterpiece it was. It's too bad there's no 3rd season out there, but considering it must have been tremendously expensive to produce, I understand.
There's not a single aspect of it I didn't like - the production value was top-notch, the actor's performances were captivating, the script was smart, and there was enough 'adult content' to satisfy my hatred of dumbing-things-down. (Not that I crave gore and boobies ... I just don't like when settings and events are diluted in film or TV.)
I don't know how historically accurate it all was, but no matter ... they have to shuffle things around to make them more dramatic. There are plenty of books out there if I was a stickler for historical accuracy.
Anyone looking for Grade A entertainment - and isn't squeamish or prudish - should drop the cash for these two seasons ... or at least add them to your Netflix cue.
(Along the same lines, Showtime's The Tudors - following the life of Henry VIII - is also highly recommended.)
