I just saw it. The first third was awesome. The rest was boring as hell. I liked Twin Peaks' dark humor. It was too serious and predictable. The lady in red with the puckered lips and spinning around was awesome.
Lynch excels at humor, not drama.
BTW, Dune had massive style and artistic direction even though the rest of it was cheesy melodrama. I liked the novel as a kid, but not so much now.

I thought the John Harrison version of Dune made for the Sci-Fi Network was a lot better in terms of narrative - lots of time spent on the political interplay - and I loved the fact that he made Messiah and Children.
Having been a hardcore Dune fan since I was a freshman in high school, I've been more disappointed in Brian Herbert's contributions to the saga than anything else. Letting him write Dune books is worse than having Spielberg direct a Kubric film ...
Fire Walk With Me was okay - an interesting revisit to one of the first TV shows I ever got addicted to. Having seen a lot of other Lynch films before FWTM, though, I was already fed up with his forced surrealism.

I loved Lynch's little flash cartoons. They kick major ass.
The moment when I was done with Dune was when I started wondering how a giant worm could propel itself forward without slithering or inching. The thing with the TV adaptation was the lack of artistic imagination and the horrible acting. They got more time to play with the politics. :thu:
Eraserhead would've been better if it was half as long. His style always captures my imagination.

Fire Walk With Me had nothing on some of the TV episodes. I was in high school when that came out, and I was glued to it every week.
I've never really gotten scared of horror movies and such even as a little kid, but I honestly had trouble getting to sleep after watching a few of those episodes.
There is quite a few good scenes from the series on Youtube.

Hell yes, I just started watching the tv show this week. I seen the movie before the show and I thought it was great. I guess I get to watch it in order of events. And I absolutely love the Dumbland flash cartoons. I still believe Blue Velvet is his ultimate masterpiece, but I love all of his stuff because it is different than most popular shit that calls itself art. It makes so much since that Lynch was a painter before he even starting directing.

Blue Velvet is his magnum opus. Needs to make comedies and other stuff to challenge himself. He shouldn't be a Tim Burton and do the same damn shit over and over.

I think Mulholland Dr. is his best overall work by far. If you want some strange evidence to prove this fact, it is the only Lynch film that other people have liked after me making them watch!
SynthLord, I am still a Dune fanatic. Best Speculative Fiction series ever conceived or written as far as I'm concerned. It's a shame Lynch's Dune was basically cursed by Producers and Hollywood in general from the get go. If you've ever read David's ORIGINAL scripts (which I have), they follow the plot, and the feel of the book VERY closely. He even said that when he originally conceptualized the film, he planned on 5-6 hours, and he REALLY wanted to go right on and do the rest of the Dune series.
As weird as his movies can be, Lynch is honestly one of the best ACTING directors in the business. It's rare to see a guy get such amazing performances out of nowhere from people. He has a real eye. He can garner really intense emotion from an audience, even if the plot makes no sense...that's talented if you ask me...

Blue Velvet is a fantastic work of art, but Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire are better IMO. Lynch is a genius of connecting with the audience on a subconscious level and I think He achieves this to a greater degree with Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire.

Agreed. Blue Velvet is just fucking weird if you ask me... Mulholland Dr is just awe-inspiringly BEAUTIFUL at times... Angelo Badalamenti's music is so spot on in Mulholland Dr as well...

Fire Walk With Me was one of my favorite Lynch films, along with Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr, and Dune. Of course, Dune is far from perfect but I love it for what it is. The first time I saw Fire Walk With Me, I felt dirty, like I'd just been molested or something. Lynch excels at making movies that are truly disturbing. I wish today's hack horror directors would study his techniques.

FWWM - very creepy film.
The thing about Lynch as an artist is that he falls in love with these ideas and images that often times have no relation to the film but he shoves them in anyway regardless. But with the films being so dreamy in the first place it's hard to argue with his choices. Once you get used to this it's easier to enjoy his films. Also, there's no point in just seeing one just once.
Another thing he does is make each character at least two identities. Every movie since Lost Highway has done this. It takes some getting used to.
