Do 6X9 speaker baffles enhance performance?

There is an after-market item called a speaker baffle. It usually seems to be made of plastic and sometimes includes a foam insert. They are said to improve/enhance speaker performance to the point that 6X9's will "thump." Is this true in your experience? Some say one has to cut them in some manner to maximize their enhancement? How is this cut done?

There are baffles made that go under the 6x9s in a car's rear deck and yes, they do improve the sound.
