Hey all, Anybody know a good spot to get an SG tremolo system? Or better yet have one for sale? I would like to put one on my SG and cant find one anywhere, this is harder than I thought it would be!!

Thanks

there are a number of vibrolas you can put on an SG. The one above is like the Gibson stock vibrola, only without the engraving. Gibson will not sell the Gibson vibrola by itself. You can also put on a Bigsby which has come on some SGs as well. The recommended Bigsby is the B5

Yeah I was thinking of the Bigsby ... by all accounts it is a better system anyway. My only issue with either of them is putting it on after the fact. I dont want to mess around with permanent changes to the guitar. Do you know if the Bigsbys go on cleanly and cover the bridge thread holes?

All Parts.com got the long nickel one like Angus Young or the short nickel one you see on the old SG specials from the sixties. theyre like $160-180 bucks a pop though. Ebay has them floating around every once and while for about 120

Both trems require screwing into the face of the guitar, so both will require permanent holes.

The Bigsby does not cover the bridge holes. A well placed B5 on an SG goes a good ways behind where the bridge is now.

The Gibson Maestro style vibrato sucks, bend on string, the whole thing may go out of tune.

Non-permanent solutions are the Stets Bar, Bowen Handle and Les Trem.

i'd say go with a stets bar they're expensive but they're really good

and i have a maestro on a sg and i hate the thing looks great but just breaks string if u ever try and use the bar plus its impossible to fit it in a normal guitar case with the bar on

The old thread holes are still visible with the new Bigsby installed. What Gibson has done is cover those holes with their 'Custom Made' plaque.

Like on the new Canadian ES335 w/Bigsby.

Gibson did at one time install Kahler Trems on SG's.
The new routed hole is small and hidden by the Kahler unit.

I myself love the looks of Maestro's and Bigsby's even tho' they don't dive bomb. You musst be gentle and subtle with them or they will go out of tune.

Or don't use them. Just fold the arm out of the way. Like Keith Richards or even Elliot Easton. His sig model has the long Maestro. He doesn't use it, just likes the looks of it.

That looks great I just looked online for one and none of the ones I saw for purchase had the old gibson style tremolo arm you have in your pics? Looks very cool.

The first LesTrem I bought had a flat arm.

The 2nd one I purchased had one like this. I thought this was an improvement.

I replaced both with Gibson style handles just because I think they look cool.

If I may ask, where did you acquire the Gibson style handles?

Did you have to cut the new Gibson style arm to install it? It looks like the round part at the bottom would be an issue fitting into the Les Trem unit?

Uh, that's sorta where the bolt goes through to hold it on. Tere is another bolt hold on the Les Trem hold the stock arm on.

One word of advice, don't use the yellow rubber spacer that is design to go between the spring and guitar finish on a real Gibson, it's the same rubber that will stain a Gibson nitro finish as it deteriorates.

Or make like Derek Trucks. He's removed the entire trem mechanism from his SG 61 RI (alongwith the scrachplate), but left the Maestro tailpiece in place because, presumably, it looks cool.

I'm putting one of those Allparts Vibrolas on an Epiphone SG right now. I hope I get it back soon from my guitar tech!
