Well, we still have one in that we haven't thrown it out and it worked the last time we used it, but that was a couple of years ago.

I have a dvd/vcr combo. Haven't used the vcr part in a while. I still do have a few tapes around.

I use mine coz I don't have a DVD recorder yet. It still does what I need.
I had a pretty bad experience with a Sanyo DVD recorder I bought on the cheap. It was sooooo bad. It kinda made me apprehensive about buying another DVD recorder.
Is there a good one that is as easy as a VCR to record?

I still have a couple of 'em - haven't yet gotten around to transfering the contents of my tapes to DVD.

Unfortunately, this is like being apprehensive about cars because your first one was a Yugo.
Check out Toshiba, Samsung, Panasonic. All three make excellent DVD recorders.

I keep a Toshiba around just so I can transfer tapes to a DVD recorder. For some reason, though, I can't bring myself to throw out the tapes...which kind of defeats the purpose of transferring them to DVD...

I've still got one until it breaks...because my 3 year old like to watch hundreds of children's tapes he got from his cousin
My brother has one he uses occasionally as a TV receiver for his projector.

Sorry if this was covered in another thread but what is the best way to transfer from VHS to DVD? Is it to buy a DVD recorder for the TV or find some way to record them to the computer? I would imagine the former is the better option but I'm not sure how that works. I just recently started looking into this and wasn't sure if it could be done yet.
Thanks

If you have a VCR, you can just record from the video/audio out onto a DVD recorder. If not, there are combo machines with a VCR and DVD recorder together. Very simple.

Tossed mine out 2 years ago. I was just using it as a makeshift RF converter, but I finally upgraded to a surround system - when I dropped the $40 Wal-Mart VCR on the floor and it smashed into a million cheap Chinese pieces, I tossed it.
Yet, after several cleaning/moving/re-organizing efforts, I still have like 6 videocassettes on my media shelves.
Why won't I throw them out?

I have a refurb VC S-VHS recorder that cost me all of $52 on Ebay. On S-VHS tape it records a 480i image that is very sharp and clear. It's indistinguishable from the off-air signal. I actually still have a Super-Beta Hi-Fi that makes a very nice copy. Plus we still use the VCR to time-shift and record shows off cable.
We have a lot of Disney tapes etc. that my grandson could watch when he gets older so I'll keep it for now. When it breaks, I'll find another used or another cheap refurb.
I'll keep using this older technolgoy because A. It's cheap. B. It works.

A belated thanks for the info. I know it's very simple with one of those machines but I'd like to be able to get the file into a workable format on the computer. From my understanding, these combo machines and the stand alone recorders are limited with their ability to create chapters and menus, etc. I'd like to be able to copy the file(s) created by the DVD recorder to a computer so I could make my DVD copies with menus and chapter points. Does that make sense?
thanks again

Sure. What you probably want is something like Nero. Current version is 8, about $60, lets you copy VHS (or any video) to your computer, manipulate it and then burn it to DVD. I'm sure there are other programs like this, but Nero is the one I'm familiar with.

I still have mine, but it is not currently hooked up to my home theater system. I bought it in 1986. About a year ago was the last time I used it, and it worked perfectly. A Panasonic is built like a tank, anyway.

I have Nero 5 on my old computer and have always liked working with it, so I think version 8 is a good choice. My only question now, is whether there is a way to link a vcr and/dvd player directly to the computer for recording. One of the guys at Best Buy told me there was no such device but I kind of doubt it. Probably need to talk to someone at Radio Shack. Ideally, I'd be able to get something with the RCA outs from the VCR to a firewire cable input to the computer.

funny question... last month I on a drive through Missouri I stopped in some hole in the wall town at a small gas station/travel store and they still had VHS tapes on the shelf for sale covered in dust and still had what seemed to be the original $20 price tag for them :D

02-03-2008, 01:33 PM
Yup, and I use it frequently.
I did just clear out about 200 VHS tapes I no longer wanted, but I probably still have 100-ish tapes around. A lot of them are movies I love/loved that I don't have on DVD. Others are tapes I got at HPB for about $1.00 and it's a movie I probably wouldn't want to pay even 5 bucks used for the DVD. Ya know, crappy 80's and 90's movies that I have nostalgia for, or picked up on a whim.
I've got all of the Universal Monster stuff on VHS, but I'd like to start getting that on DVD. Also I have the "Chance to own the version (but restored with Digital THX :o) Original Star Wars Trilogy... one last time..." Sure enough, about two years later the SE Star Wars came out. I never got SE on VHS, but I do have the Silver Boxed Set one.

still got one, don't do any recording on it anymore but we've got a lot of films which haven't been transferred + videos are a lot cheaper and more common than dvds in the 2nd hand shops where I live so I can get 3 films for £1.50 instead of £40ish

I still have one. I've got original family videos on VHS and obscure movies that I transfer onto dvd.
My spare vehicle, a '94 Toyota pickup still has a cassette player in it. There's nothing like rewinding a tape looking for the beginning of a song.:thu:

I do. Why? There's a kick ass porn tape stuck in there. No sh*t! The thing died with one of my sisters TaeBo tapes in there. About a year or so later, I decided to see if it would eject...sure enough, during the downtime the VCR must have mustered up enough juice to eject it. So, I was like..."Sweeeeet, now I can start watching the ole porn collection again. " I put in a classic porn tape of mine and hit play. Nothin. Tried to eject. Nothin. So, hopefully in about six months the eject button will work again. :idk:

bingo! i've used them to create mixes for all-nite parties days in advance. 2 sources into mixer, into vhs deck, set for 6 (or 8, depending on tape) hour speeds. fidelity is darn good, and this method allows for fades between tracks (unlike ipod/cd shuffling).

I got a VCR/DVD combo. My sisters still use the VCR side for there movies but were about to upgrade to either 1080 up-convert or a blu ray. i just use my mac to watch movies.

I remember our family's first VCR back in the early 80's. I think my dad paid 300-400 dollars for it I could be wrong but it was super expensive nonetheless. It was fucking huge and heavy and had those buttons where they were more like levers you had to force all the way down to play. :thu:

Yep, still have one along with my DVD recorder. One day maybe I'll get all the VHS tapes transferred to DVD, but I'm not in any big hurry.
Now you guys are REALLY gonna laugh - not only do I have the VHS VCR, but I still have a Betamax VCR in a closet! I was one of those during the 80's format wars who felt Beta was better, and I still have a large collection of tapes on Beta. Again, one day I'll transfer them, but the Beta machine still works fine.

You can pick up old '80s classics on VHS for $0.75 + shipping on half.com etc. I always buy DVD when it's available, but if it's something rare, I'll get VHS if it's in excellent condition. Picked up Deadly Blessing not long ago on VHS, I kinda like it that way.
