I read that replacement batteries are very, very expensive.

You actually CAN replace an iPod battery yourself, no need to go through Apple. If you google: ipod battery replacement, you'll find plenty of options.
FWIW the Zen player I have has a user-replaceable battery.

BTW I assume that replacing the battery yourself voids any warranty that your iPod has. Then again if the battery's dead, the warranty probably already expired.

+1
I replaced two different iPods(1st and 3rd generation) with those batteries and they work very well. I think they are guaranteed for 10 years.
The directions are clear and it's not that hard to pry them open, as long as you use some umph.

I've replaced the battery in a 3rd gen ipod and a 5th gen (video). It isn't terribly difficult, but it isn't particularly easy, either.
You need the proper tool for opening the ipod (I've read that it is possible to open them with other things, but you'll most likely end up breaking the plastic tabs on the front cover. Replacing the front cover involves dealing with almost microscopic machine screws. Besides, replacement batteries come with a tool).
Most of the places that sell replacement batteries have pretty good instructions and some even have video.

I've also used this company's replacement kits in our 3rd Gen and Mini. The kit included the case opening tool and very detailed instruction. Doing both batteries took me less than an hour and they've been working great ever since.

Buy a new one?
Great idea.
Hey, when I left work yesterday my car wouldn't start because I had a dead battery. Should I just buy a new car?
I hate the disposable culture in this country, and most certainly the new resurgence of proprietary parts and service.

Simple if you are not confident and comfortable than go to Apple service centre or any Apple outlet. Tell them your problem and let them do it.
You can not be expert in every thing.
Why are you taking burden of these kind of things. Just go to apple outlet and ask them for the battery assistance. If this one is within warranty peiod than they willl change it free of cost otherwise pay for the new one.

it's $100 you can do it yourself for less than half that

It's a well-established fact that iPod batteries wear out, and that you can save big bucks by replacing the battery yourself. A new how-to video walks you through the steps.
Although surgery on your beloved iPod may seem horrifying, it's actually a pretty simple procedure. The video shows you how to open the casing, pop out the old battery and swap in a new one, all without leaving a scratch on your precious.
U-tube offers battery-replacement videos for most iPod models, along with videos on replacing hard drives, LCD screens and more.If there's an iPod resurrection in your future, you can learn a lot more from watching these videos than you ever could from a page of printed instructions.

Last time when I had a problem with my iPod than one of my friend helped me. As he knows these things really well. Why don't you ask your friends as well. May be someone can help you.

You pull off the bottom and pull the entire guts out. It is supposed to slide down out. Just don't pry too hard, and watch out for the little components.
