I was sent a pair of these to check out, and was very, very surprised at how effective they are in terms of isolating speakers from the surfaces on which they sit. Apparently I wasn't the only one :) -- check out this press release for AES (they cost $99 each):

The Primacoustic Recoil Stabilizer™ is a floating nearfield monitor platform that eliminates disruptive resonant coupling from the loudspeaker to the stand, while providing a stable base to reduce the recoil caused by the forward energy of the loudspeaker motion.

Made from three basic components, the Recoil Stabilizer™ begins with a high-density urethane foam base that isolates the speaker from the shelf, monitor-bridge or stand to effectively eliminate troublesome vibration-borne resonance that would otherwise be transmitted to the substructure.

Although isolation solves one problem it unfortunately introduces another. Think of what happens when you shoot a rifle. The energy of the bullet explodes forward while the gun itself recoils backwards. This is no different than what happens with a loudspeaker. When a transient hits the speaker, the same effect occurs. The energy of the speaker moving forward forces the loudspeaker to sway backwards and recoil, reducing the sharpness of the transient. To eliminate the recoil, you must stabilize the loudspeaker by adding mass. This is the magic of the Recoil Stabilizer; by introducing a dense-mass (heavy) laser-cut steel plate, the added mass holds the speaker in place very much the same way as a gyro prevents a missile from veering off course.

To further ensure the loudspeaker does not move, a non-slip neoprene top surface is applied. This along with the isolation foam sandwich the stabilizer plate so that it does not resonate. This is augmented with a front panel that is curved to vary the mass, and eliminate the chance for a standing wave to exist.

The results are impressive! By reducing the backward 'recoil' energy as the speaker coil pushes energy forward, initial waveform transients no longer suffer lag and the sharpness of the resulting pulse is more defined. There is significantly greater detail at all frequencies, with tighter bottom-end and improved depth of field.

The Recoil Stabilizer will be available in various sizes and weights to address different speaker designs and may be ordered in both standard and custom angles to precisely aim the loudspeakers for critical listening environments.

Notice: A patent has been applied for with the US Patent Office.

Quotes from some of the top folks in the business:

"A noticeably improvement in the sound with better imaging and a better controlled low end. the Recoil Stabilizers are the best isolators I have tried so far."

Paul White, Editor
Sound on Sound Magazine

"The Recoils are remarkable! They seem to clear up the low mids, bring out the ultra lows and the transients come alive with greater detail. Very impressive!"

Joe Chiccarelli, Engineer-Producer
Bon Jovi, Frank Zappa, Tori Amos, Chicago, Poco, Bob Seger, Annie Lennox

"As soon as I replaced the foam wedges I had under my speakers, I heard a noticeable difference: The Recoils instantly sounded and looked way cooler. F.ing Awesome!

Butch Walker, Engineer-Producer
Avril Lavigne, Fall Out Boy, Pink, Sevendust, Hot Hot Heat, Simple plan,
The Donnas,

"Really good first impression on the Recoil Stabilizers. The sound seems to jump out more and have a clearer bottom."

Daniel Lanois
U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, Ron Sexsmith, Robbie
Robertson

"It's all about mass. Recoil Stabilizers add a noticeable measure of clarity for serious listening on stand-mounted monitors."

George Petersen, Editor
Mix Magazine

"I found the improvement to be dramatic. the mix as having much more depth - reverbs and panning were much more obvious. The Recoils offer a simple way to kick your monitor's performance up a notch."

David Rideau, Engineer-Producer
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson, Sting, TLC, Earth Wind and Fire

"The Recoil Stabilizers are great! A huge difference from regular foam pads. They sound more stationary and connected. I'm quite happy with them."

Elliot Scheiner, Engineer - Producer
Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Sting, The Eagles, Queen , REM, Faith Hill,

"The Recoils clear up and sweeten the tone overall and give a heavier, tighter bass. More fun to listen with for sure! Bottom line; They work."

Ari Raskin Chief Engineer - Chung King Studios
Justin Timberlake, Will I Am, Sean Paul, Moby, Backstreet Boys, Black
Eyed Peas,

"I'm naturally skeptical, but the Recoil Stabilizers are the real deal. They do a great job of decoupling the speakers and give more accurate bass and better imaging. It's not just a subtle difference, but an obvious improvement."

Interesting, I'll have to check them out. What an endorsement list!

They had a really cool A-B test--same speakers on thick foam and on the Primacoustics. Kendrix was there :) The difference was obvious, and very much like what I heard back in my studio.

It seems silly that foam and a machined metal plate could make such a difference, but it was obvious to anyone who heard it.

I just arrived back home in Rockchester after the drive from the big apple.

I happened to run into Craig around the time he headed in for the demo of these Primacoustic speaker pads. As Craig mentioned the improvement the pads brought was NOT at all subtle.

I happen to own a set of ceramic cones that support my KRK7000 monitors on my desks "bridge" (aka top of bookshelf). The mechanical de-coupling that these cones effect really sharpened things up for me.

Just as the reviews mentioned you get a much tighter bottom and punchier overall sound. It's literally more in phase because the phase smearing associataed with speaker movement or speaker / support interactions is effectively eliminated.

I'd love to do an A/B of these cones against the Primacoustic pads.

However, based on my experience with both the cones and the demo of the pads, some sort of a solution to this is a must-do for anyone that's even half serious about trying to mix music using desktop monitors.
Its for real.

Agreed! I'm going to be reviewing these for the next issue of Harmony Central Confidential newsletter (which you all subscribe to, of course. Right? Right?!?).
