Some students choose a college strictly for its academic attributes, while others are prone to pick a school on the basis of its reputation for revelry. Some institutions even manage to offer equal servings of both. Here's what students have to say about ten schools known for their high party quotients:
1. University of Tennessee at Knoxville

Students agree that “UTK is a social school. Everywhere you go, it’s about football or basketball or frat parties.” Writes one student, “Well, every week we definitely look forward to the weekend...If it’s football season, then it’s even better.”

2. Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge

Students reacted with mixed emotions to their school's ranking in 2000 as the “Number One Party School” in a certain college guide. Though the ranking was based entirely on information LSU students reported about campus life there, some students responded with skepticism. Said a sophomore accounting major, “They don't really have parties on campus or anything like that.” But a freshman called the ranking “a source of pride” and a senior said it was “pretty much accurate,” adding, “It doesn't have to mean it's a bad thing. I party, but I do well in school, and that goes for most of my friends.” Everyone agrees, however, that “this is a fun place to go to school.”

3. University of California at Santa Cruz

“Life here at Santa Cruz is so relaxed,” says a junior. Santa Cruz has your standard supply of “bars, restaurants, [and] movie theatres.” Frats don’t seem particularly overbearing at the school, though they are an option. Basically, kids like to do what they do everywhere (albeit in a hot tub overlooking the Pacific): “Party, party, and party some more.”

4. Florida State University

Tallahassee clubs are “decent,” and there are always parties to crash, both at private off-campus houses and at fraternities and sororities. Greek organizations are extremely popular and are known as much for their charitable endeavors as for the parties that they host.

5. University of Colorado at Boulder

Students love living in Boulder because “it is full of great restaurants, movie theaters, and shops. So if you can't keep yourself busy with CU concerts, intramural sports, or student groups, there's still plenty to do.” The music scene is also strong in Boulder.

Stressing About the Admissions Process?

Use Student Match from The Princeton Review--then relax and let the best schools find you. Use our college search. We've also put together some lists of some of the more intense schools: colleges with super-competitive admissions, places with really dedicated professors, and more.

6. University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa

Students go to class and then “just chill” until about 10 PM, when “everyone goes out, just about every night.” The weekend begins in Tuscaloosa on Thursday night, and “on Fridays, everybody goes to happy hour and skips class.”

7. Saint Bonaventure University

The school forbids fraternities or sororities, but luckily, the hopping off-campus party scene here is truly something to behold. To sum it up in three words or less: “Parties, parties, parties.”

8. Ohio State University at Columbus

The core of OSU life is Buckeye football: “If you don’t like football before coming here,” warns one student, “you will learn to.” Students also love to party, reporting that “a major part of the OSU lifestyle is the party scene...”

9. University of Wisconsin at Madison

Madison undergrads report an active, but not overwhelming, party scene on campus. Writes one, “Yes, people party at Madison. There are some that do nothing but, and some who never do. Most, however, find a balance between parties and the thriving cultural scene Madison offers...The greatest thing about Madison is that whatever you’re interested in, someone else is, too.”

10. University of Florida

Life at UF revolves around sports--specifically, football and basketball--and partying...Students party from Wednesday to Saturday night, and though many consider Gainesville to be a “podunk town,” there are plenty of clubs and bars. Also, the university provides a lake where students can sail, canoe, and Jet Ski for free.
