It's nice to find somewhere to get some answers to my lighting questions. This is my first lighting post so please bear with me. I play bass in a christian band and i'm ready to take our shows to another level. I've got my pyro permit but we play mainly at churches and i'm sure thy wont like the pyro idea. Plus ventalation and fire codes wont allow it. So my next choice is to go for intelligent lights. (safer and actually cheaper in the long run) My question is what are som good entry level scanners that are decent priced(1200.00 street price) but not stripped down. Im looking for good deep colors and the longest projection possible in this price range. Next up is controllers. I want something that is programable but not overly complicated. No bottom line systems but no whole hog systems either. Ill suplement the scanners with par64's so ill probably start with 4 scanners as this seems to be a good starting point. Lastly, just out of currisoty, what is the projection distance on the american dj mighty scan? All thoese features for such a good price, somethings got to give somewhere. mabey optics? Sorry for being long winded but I want to cover all my bases. THANKS!!!!!

For scanners i would check out a cmpany called MAD lightning, and for the controller I would have chosen Lightputer SceneSetter 12/24 or a bigger modell.

You get what you pay for and considering that a decent scan is aimed at a rich industry, you can't by anything cheap that is any good.
VariLite 2402 and 2202's are light and reliable (striking problems almost sorted) although quite pricey. 24 channel desks wont go very far when one of these units uses up to 15 channels.
Avolites pearl2000 and Azure desks have plenty of channels to deal with a large light show but these are expensive (although not hog prices).
Okay, this is top end stuff I know but I find it hard to recommend budget moving lights when even the top range stuff is so unreliable.

the scenesetters ar not a very good choice for moving-lights, they are cheap but the precision
is not enough to do nice smooth moving's.
For disco use, it's ok, not for a serieus live-use.
Same rules for the Mad scan-construction, look out for something strong and secure (futerelight, Coemar, etc, etc)
be carefull for secondhand moving-light material, most of them are gone.....
The AD/GLP mightyscan is a 24v-250watt ficture, good quality, with NOT enough light to stay next to par 64 !!
you needed minimal a 200 msd ficture here.
greetings.

you might try the lighting board at www.prosoundweb.com. (http://www.prosoundweb.com.) you can find out how others have used some of the systems you're looking at. basically with lighting it all depends on how far you want to throw it. the american dj mighty scan is not a bad "wiggle light" if you're not throwing it from a 75 foot grid height. if you are throwing from that type of height you might want to look at something like a martin fixture. the smaller adj light will look weak because it uses a smaller bulb. as far as desks.. american dj also makes a decent control board for under 1k. i don't remeber the exact name.. but i have read where some ld's say it gives you the most bang for the buck.
