Here is a real cheap, and easy to use lighting control. It doesn't dim, or switch real fast, but hey!, its cheap, and it works.
Install a couple of X-10 wall sockets (get em at Radio Shack) in a metal quad box, wire on a good length of heavy cable, and TA-DA!, a two channel remote control light switch. You can get a little X-10 controller for under 10 bucks, and 2 of these cable assemblies shouldn't be much more that $100. I use this setup for little solo gigs with 2 little trees with par 38's. The X-10 control signal rides on the AC line, so there are no control lines to hook up, just plug in and go.
