i have a gig coming up at a ballroom- there will probably be 200+ people coming, and all they are providing us is a stage. what are some good ways to set up a couple of strobe lights and a fog machine? (like placement and stuff.) any good cheap stuff we could acquire?

Strobe lighting and Fog machines generally require someone to operate them. Most smoke machines have timers so you could set it to go off occasionally. Some people in the audio might get cheesed off if you over do it, as well as some of the band. You have to be very careful with Strobe lighting as there are a good amount of epileptics around. Having strobes on all the time or more to the point, for too long contravenes (sp) health and safety laws in most civilised countries. Do so at your own risk..
If the Ballroom has some lighting, then you would be better off employing a lighting operator. The human operating feel is hard to beat if they are any good and it saves you humping more kit around for nothing. If you want the strobe thing and the smoke machine, then throw them at the lighting bloke and get him to put them up and operate them.
If you do end up doing it yourself, keep the smoke machine away from where people are dancing/standing. Smoke fluid is slippery and make cause and injury that someone may think you should be responsible for. Strobe lights are very high voltage and will hurt if it falls on someone whilst on. Hanging them somewhere with proper hook clamps and safety chains is the best way. You could put them on stands but if they are badly placed, someone will knock them over...
Good luck
