I have a question about the sp-555.
When passing a loop from loop capture to a pad, do you have to stop the playback of the loop to do this? In other words, do you have to stop the playback of a loop to assign it to a pad?
thanx,

I'll ask :)

No, you don't have to stop. You can build up entire songs on a "sound on sound" basis, and I saw the demo guy hitting the pads after he recorded various loops.
It's a cool box!

How close is this box to being a viable competitor to Ableton Live?

Also a question: I'm confused about the documentation's use of "measure".
Does one "measure" count as one beat; that is, can I create a loop sequence of 3 beats, so I would have a measure of 3/4 time at a variable bpm?
Or would I be doomed to 4/4 time signature?

i'm totally thinking about using this as a Livereplacement. The 4 measure limitation on the loop feature should be 8 measures.

Translation: No it's not a suitable Live alternative
True/false?

Yeah, I realized later that he was probably a bot rather than a person.
It'd be cool if this thing was a hardware equivalent of Ableton Live, barring excessive pricing - past a certain price point, a new laptop w/ Live would be a better deal.

Unfortunately I didn't have enough experience with it to make a valid comment...other members of the video team were assigned to Roland, so I just zoomed up to the demo guy to ask the one question regarding going to a pad, and went on to other things.
Don't know if it has the same "scene" options as Ableton Live, and of course, it doesn't have a DAW-like arrange view.

Well considering that Ableton does Real Time Timestretching and this box does NOT (as none of the SP series does), i doubt it will be much a replacement.
If you don't use the Real Time Timestretching on Ableton then maybe more so...
You also have to remember that many people use the VSTi's within Ableton and also use Ableton to Trigger Remote boxes, again, if you use Ableton Live that way, this isn't much a replacement, as it doesn't do that either..
Cheers,
Dave

Good points! Upon rereading the literature, Roland does appear to be promoting the SP-555 as a tool to complement rather than replace DAWs.
Gearwire now has a short demo vid:
