Well being fat in America is the worst thing anyone can be.
Our society is so sick and programmed like robots that even true arts can be over come with weight.
I thought this girl had one of the best voice and I also believe her "weight" caused her votes!

Maybe.... but I think she was the least versitile too. And lets face it, AI isn't really a singing contest.

I agree that Reuben was a big guy but the point is people are more though on women with weight then men.
Back in the days you had the "Fat Boys" but never the Fat Girls.
In fact most guys with weight are called names like teddy bears and love bears but people are more hard on women. So to end I'll say it's different when you have a woman with weight issues on a program like AXE2 2001 says, pretends to be a singing contest.

Ever notice how the male winners of AI are all ... uh ... non-threatening? That is to say that a guy who would be a threat to go out after winning and sex up some young women won't ever win AI.
Ruben was a "nice guy" that women wouldn't be throwing panties at. The other guy on the last show with him seemed gay. Taylor was like an old man.
If Ruben was cut like LL Cool J he NEVER would have won... no matter how good he sang. None of the guys who women really drool over never make it real deep into the contest. Besides....
Anyone who thinks that AI is a talent show needs therapy. ;)

Just a reminder: shows air later in other parts of the country than they do on the east coast. Posting the results before they've aired elsewhere can spoil the show for others -- especially if the results are posted in the title of the thread as they were here.
Personally, it didn't bother me much that I found out here what happened before I watched the show tonight because I'm not a big AI fan this season; but it might have bothered others.
Something to consider anyway... ;)
As far as the topic is concerned, I think no one else comes close to Melinda Doolittle ... so it doesn't matter when they get voted off -- they're all going down!
Best,
Geoff

Oprah is pretty chunky, and has battled weight throughout her career, doesn't seem to have really hurt her popularity.
I don't watch AI, but from what I've read/heard, there have been many surprises along the way. Who was that metrosexual Indian guy that lasted weeks longer than anybody expected?
My guess is that this girl was just another victim of a fickle American audience.
Probably wouldn't hurt for her to mix in a salad every now and then though.

I think Jordin is going to be the winner, she is the only young, AI style candidate left... Melinda is great, but I think the young people tha vote on idol find her too old school... Blake is contemporary, but he really isn't that fantastic of a singer... They guy can sing, but he really is limited as far as genres go... All these people however, will get some kind of record deal after this show...

Lakisha was voted off because she could not sing the song she chose. It was obvious she changed the parts because she could not hold the long, changing note. She tried once last night and got half way through. Of the three girls left she was by far the worst singer. I thought she would be gone last week after having two bad weeks of performances, but obviouslly people prefer overweight to bug-eyed and bald.
Anyway, I am still pulling for Jordan, who is also very overweight by pop standards. Melenda boars me to death and I don't like Blake's voice. Jordan keeps getting better every time.
Any anyone who critisizes the publics vote based on looks, race or sex has not followed the show over the years. I feel a bit proud looking at the winners. Kelly always looked clumsy on stage but she can really sing. Women and minorities are well represented in the winner's circle. No one seems to care that Lakisha is overweight, Melenda has no neck, or Jordan is a bit overweight and comes from a mixed-race family. Of the final 5 this year only Blake qualifies as having "the look". Who else would give a nerd like Clay or a single mother like Fantasia a chance for stardom?

It was Lakisha's time to go..
This is totally different from losing Jen Hudson in the past(also overweight) or even different from losing Latoya & Tamyra Gray(couldn't garner a fan base). The honest truth is Lakisha couldn't hold a candle to those ladies!
Industry people have and will continue to build projects around those young ladies like television, movies, plays, and CD's, and people will pay to see those proects. I can't think of Lakisha generating that kind of industry noise. She just isn't of the same caliber. Not right now anyway.

I totally agree. Ive been pleasantly surprised at how little looks and/or race seem to have influenced the results. Clay, Rueben, Kelly, Fantasia arent exactly pop idol material from the perspective of looks. Ace was certainly playing on his cutsie factor and it did him no good. Same for Sanjaya.

Well what would you do if you were Lakisha and had to sing like a BeeeeeeJeeeee Puhlease!!!
Speakin a please, please dont tell the idol producers as it say in the contract you cant write on the internet during the week a the show! It also say in the contract that jordin gonna win, melindas 50 years old, and the Pink performance was taped 2 years ago, and to keep all that hush hush.

I wouldn't want to go far as saying anyone who thinks looks is not a huge factor in todays music needs therapy. But I wouldn't argue at all, especially in the pop/RnB and the others.Looks play a very crucial role.
Is Ruben still selling records? Come one, looks will not make you sound better but it definitely influence your sales and overall packaging as a musician.

Are we talking about selling records or are we talking about how the public votes for contestants on American Idol? The voting public for AI is much more tolerant than the marketing machine behind so many record companies.

I thought Lakisha had a great voice. Surprised she was booted off. But to be honest the only one's who did anything from this show was Kelly and Carrie. The rest kind of just faded. They all seem to sing the same songs with the same style and it's getting old. They should start their own band and write their own songs. To be honest if I was ever on AI, I would go as far as I could, keep my band at home and when I gained popularity I would push my band instead of singing those boring songs that other people write.

Is Ruben still selling records?
Yes. Reportedly not good ones. On his own record label. With 1/3 of his output being gospel music. Not the finest hitmaking recipe.
Lakisha was just #4 this week. Time to go. With thousands of auditioners, her success is more of a victory for weight-challenged females than a tragedy.

Tamyra Grey has been on several TV shows, and is cast as Mimi Marquez in a Broadway production of RENT later this year.

Being, apparently, the only person on this BB not glued to American Idol every week, I was unaware that there was a Lakisha on AI... I'm not sure that it would have made much difference -- unless I thought our Lakisha was their Lakisha. But I wasn't any too sure our Lakisha was either a woman or African American. (In fact, that didn't even hit me until I'd had a chance to absorb the street talk component... [out here in The LBC, even cowboys talk ghetto... circa 1986. :D ] At first I just assume our Lakisha was some dude from Lakisha, Wisconsin, or something.)

Never heard of a dude from Wisconsin named anything close to that. I should have some stupid remark, but I'm at a complete loss.
It's like when somebody uses the phrase "Rob Lowe" in a sentence. I actually saw that happen a couple of weeks ago. I laughed for a while. I don't even recall the context, but do I need to?

You know: "Well, he gave me this look, like, you know, so I Rob Lowed him one, but good."
Anyhow, I was thinking the dude from WI had taken the Native American name of his Wisconsin town, Lakisha, for his BB name... see?
Anyhow, I just did the maps.google thing and there doesn't actually appear to be a Lakisha, WI, so, you know... I guess not.
But that was what I was thinking.
BTW, there IS a myspace page for a Lakisha FROM Wisconsin...

Ok, I'll bite..
While there maybe many things wrong with AI and its production week to week, the band ain't one of 'em. 1st of all the tempos and arrangements are worked out with the singers.. Not despite them. Sure the drummer plays loud and syncopated. And?? I mean is there a problem with a great drummer kicking ass thru much of a hot song?
Our music history is riddled with great tunes punctuated by outstanding drummer performances. Not a thing wrong with it. Well maybe one thing... And that would be lackluster amatuer singers having a hard time keeping up with the band! You can't change to accomodate inexperience. The singers must simply improvise, overcome and adapt because right after the TV show ends, they begin a long tour, so they have to be whipped into shape before then!
Ok, so onto the more important question. Why doesn't anyone write articles about WHO THESE MUSICAINS ARE in the band, and there history and experiences? I mean they are the resident band for the most watched show on television!

Nope. He always sounded like that.
Bee Gees had great harmonies and falsettos, and their voices blended well together. Individually, they kinda sucked. Unfortunately, we'll never get to hear them together again.

I don't run from trolls like you and not afraid of getting thrown/banned out of this forum. The show is suppose to be about singing and people are suppose to vote on on that not physical appearance. All over the industry, people with weight problem are being passed over.

I may not be a man or a toddler seeing how I'm a cat, but I'm wondering, what makes you so sure she was voted off because of her physical appearance? You say that as if it is an agreed upon fact. I don't agree. I think she was voted off because of her singing.
Is it possible, not saying you have to agree with me, but is it possible, just possible, you might be wrong?
Ever hear the phrase "even paranoids sometimes have true enemies?" Well, even singers who are discriminated against because they're fat sometimes are also legitimately judged by their vocal limitations.
Lakisha has a beautiful voice. However, she has one gear, one timbre, one sound. Sure you could make a great album with her, but she seems to have a limited comfort zone and beyond that it's not pretty. Plus, she's not particularly charismatic and there's nothing about her that's all that new or interesting.
Melinda, who is no charisma queen herself, has a phenomenal voice that is light years beyond Lakisha, voice to voice. Melinda's voice is four dimensional to Lakisha's one dimension.
Although she's no Melinda, Jordin has a decent pop voice and can sing a mean ballad. Jordin also has a likeability that comes through when she sings. Actually, her likeability comes through all the time. Sort of like mine. purrrrrr purrrrrr purrrrrr
But frankly, Dr. Atkins, Jordin's got some extra meat on her bones, herself. But Jordin's extra meat won't stop her from winning American Idol. Which she will.
Blake isn't my taste, but enough people think he's hip so he's made it this far. Next week he'll be gone.
But this was Lakisha's week to go, even is she was as thin as Naomi, and weighed no more than a kitten.
Meow.

Hey, the band has been talked about, a lot. Honestly, I did not know who Ricky Minor is until AI. But, I've never been to LA either. It is nice that this year the band gets even more face time during the show. Frequently a musician will sit center stage with the singer and play. Even a drummer.

As usual Duddits hit the nail on the head. You have no basis to say Lakisha was voted off because of her size or weight. There's simply no proof of that. Besides, she outlasted many others who do exemplify the pop culture myth that only svelte young things are winners.
What we can say is true beyond a shadow of a doubt is that her singing on Stayin' Alive was absolutely atrocious. She over anunciated each word and sang way behind the beat. Not a good style for that song. The legato style the BeeGees brought to the original recording is something she shouldn't have ditched. I don't think she was even aware she was phrasing it so differently than the Bee Gees.
That's why she was voted off, IMO.
Hope she finds her niche though.

Yeah, I don't think it was a weight thing. I think it's that a) the singing wasn't that great this time around (as the say about the music biz, "You're only as good as your last hit single"), b) she's not really very charismatic, and c) Blake's performance was worse, but he was so original the week before that people wanted him to stay in to see what he was going to do next.
Personally, I think the real loser for that show was the audience. The Bee Gee songs didn't translate well for solo singers, the performers were all off, and it just kind of went on forever. Thank you, Tivo.
Mark my words...Lakisha will get a decent gig in the industry, regardless of her weight.

I`m not sure it was her weight. Most of the winners have that something extra that appeals to the masses. Call it charisma or something but she did not have it as much. AI gets a bad rap but the truth is they also discover some true talent. Kelly Clarkson can sing! I own her first record and its very, very good. Top notch production, good songs and she gives one performance after another showing her true versatility. She will be around for a long time. And she is not that hot.
