Ok.. I wasn't sure whether I should ask this question in the drums forum or this forum.. it seemed like the guys in drum forum only talked about live drums so I'll try here first.. Does anyone know how to take a regular acoustic drum snare sound and turn it into a crashing snare? Kind of like a splashing sound.. Examples would be like in a lot of trip hop music.. it sounds like a crashing snare with echo added to it. Reverb perhaps? But its like a real quick thump, but its high pitched i think.. i played around with stuiff like pitch, reverb, compression, etc.. but i cant get the right mix and i dont want to sample.. anyone have any idea? Is it the attack? Decay? LFOs? please help!

songs with this snare sound (mostly electronic songs)
Esthero (Country living
Mono (Life in Mono)
Radiohead (Fog)
Amon Tobin (People like Frank)
Goldfrapp (Utopia)

I am unclear what you want, but I will try.

I use reverse gating on my snare when I want it to have a trip-hop feel. There are some plugs out there that have this feature (look for gated reverb).
Also if you need the snare to be more in your face...copy the snare track over so that you have two. Insert a compressor to one of the tracks. Turn the ratio up really high then start moving the threshold until all you hear is a sharp stick sound. It is a very short, clipped thwack. Then you add this to the other snare track to taste.

Peace

yea, i'm not sure exactly what sound u are going for either. any other examples? I've heard that Amon Tobin song, but i haven't dissected it.

have u tried the obvious, upping the root pitch and adding resonance, or lowering pitch and adding reso?

Might also want to try filtering out the low....

it's like a thwack sound instead of a snare.. or maybe a slap or clap? im runnng out of onomatopeoias i'm not sure,.. heres what i tried so far without any success:

Shorten the Attack
Raise pitch a few cents all the way to an octave or higher
Adding a gated reverb (though im not sure if I did it right)

Some better examples!

Phil Collins: In the Air tonight!
INXS songs..
Mono : Life in Mono
Massive Attack : Protection
Madonna : Music
or ANY drum and bass song actually...
