View Full Version : Singing and Playing at the Same Time: Simple Song Suggestions

I believe this to be on topic.
I've been playing guitar for about two years and bass for about six months. Since the beginning, I've had major difficulty playing and singing at the same time--so much so that I had convinced myself that I couldn't do it.
After spending a whole lot of time practicing this past weekend I was able to play and sing one song all the way through. The song? Drivin' N' Cryin' - Straight to Hell. Very simple song - GCD.
I'm looking for some more very simple, yet cool songs, to practice my singing and playing.

Message in a Bottle and Every Breath You Take are very easy if you fingerpick them. Here Comes the Sun. Blackbird. A ton of Simon & Garfunkel songs. Most stuff written in the 60s, come to think of it, if you don't want to take the fingerpicking route.

look for songs that either have a straight eighth or quarter note pulse in the guitar or songs where the guitar doubles the vocal melody. examples:paranoid(straight eighth note pulse) and Ironman(guitar follows melody)

Knockin' On Heaven's Door i think will work fine. That was something I did as a new guy. I think Green Day's acoustic number "Good Riddance" would be pretty good. It's G,D,C with an e minor thrown into the chorus. not too hard. You'll get it. It's certainly not an easy thing to master.

Singing and playing simultaneously can be everything from real simple to VERY difficult.
Try some reggae backbeats, Marley, medium tempo stuff.

yeah, i've got the same problem. now i'm trying to play some coldplay stuff and sing at the same time. you can try stuff like Don't Panic. nice and easy song
Jimi Hendrix's Foxy Lady is good. I was able to sing/play it pretty quickly (and I normally have trouble doing either seperately:) ).

all along the watchtower{dylan version}is a good starter
capo 4th fret if you have one
it's just ........Am, Am/G, F, G, repeated
{Am/G is just a normal A minor with your pinkie
on the 3rd fret bottom E string}
.......there must be some kind of way out of here.......
