Fuchs was showing some cool stuff at NAMM. Since nobody else mentioned it, I figured I would give my "mini NAMM report":
Fuchs had a few of the Overdrive Supreme amps on hand, almost 7 years in production and they keep getting better. They had a really sweet Red 100-W head and matching 212 cabinet as well as a couple of 112 ODS combos around the show. Lull Guitars had one, and there was also an ODS-100 in the Motion Sound booth too. Andy mentioned they had recently upgraded the motherboards to a new style with heavier traces, and a cleaner layout that took 7 years of suggestions and improvements into account. The power supply board has been upgraded too, to lower filament noise further, and to look as good as the motherboards now do. The amps are RoHs and CE compliant for export too.
The Tripledrives were also there in full force. There was a 100-W TDS in the Eminence booth that just absolutely smoked a 9-K boutique amp next-to it. Tomo Fujita was doing tone demos, mostly through the Fuchs, showing off the amazingly wide range of speakers Eminence makes. Clean or dirty that amp kicks serious ass. Clean-Crunch-Dirty and a reverb that reminded me of the old Ampeg blue diamonds from the 60s': Deep yet warm and spacious. Fuchs had a TDS-150 (150 watts !) in the booth driving a 4 X 12 G12H30 equipped Guitar-cable.com anvilized roadcase/speaker cabinet. Stupid amounts of clean headroom and righteous overdrive. Jeff Pevar was ripping through it while I was there.
Fuchs proudly introduced two new metal amps: The Frost-100-1 and Frost-100-2. They use 4 Sovtek 6550 power tubes, and the new Tung-SOl preamp tubes from New Sensor too. The 100-1 is a pretty straightforward JCM-800 styled amp with hi/low gain configuration with a preamp gain, a master volume, high mid, low, presence. The Frost-100-2 has a primary channel that's really kinda bluesy like the ODS amps, and it goes from fairly clean to pretty screamy. It also has pre and post volumes, high, mid, and low controls. The second channel is like the 100-1, in high gain mode, and does the scooped-mid metal shredder thing really well. An all tube FX loop, which is relay bypassed when not in use, and runs +4 and -20db effects with the flick of a switch. Jack Frost (the co-designer) did a few performances with it at the Fuchs booth, the EV booth and Moser Guitars booth. Louder than three hells, but really organic like all the other Fuchs amps, with a nice deep tight bottom. Seemed pretty quiet for the amount of gain on tap too. They had a Frost in a custom NAMM show flamed biker-style cabinet that I reeeeeeally would have loved to take home ! Sounded as nice as it looked. Queensryche has a few on tour with them, and a few other endorsements are pending.
Fuchs endorser Matt O'Ree (www.mattoree.com) played the Hilton Lobby show with the Train-45 and a 2 x 12 Lead-80 equipped cabinet. The amp, a tube screamer and a wah, and the tone was amazing ! Matt traded in-his Komet and now endorses the Train, and I could hear why ! He played ZZ-Top's "Tush", and it sounded amazing. Maybe better than the record !
Caravanserai, (a Santana tribute band) played the next night at the Hilton. The lead guitarist Leo Herrera used a Fuchs ODS-100 in red suede, and his tone was total Carlo's all the way. Of-course the PRS Santana guitars he was playing helped.... maybe a little.
