I am a guitar player of 12 yrs. and am 23 years old. I am wanting the software and hardware that will act as a drum machine, bass player, keyboardist, sound effects and allow me to lay down numerous guitar and vocal tracks all on my computer. I also would like do all my own mastering etc. My computer still has lots (34G) of memory left. What to do...what to do!
your friend,
Brett

cakewalk products are good to start out with. Try using home studio. It uses your sound card to play midi drums, bass, etc...and allows you to record your live gear such as guitars..You must have a decent soundcard though.

Home Studio, while being an awsome piece of software, will not take the the place of a drummer, bassist, keyboardist...You can record your own music with your soundcard, but you have to play it yourself. HomeStudio 2002 does have Session Drummer, but it really hasn't impressed me yet...
I think Band-in-a-Box would be more what you're looking for:

Home Studio would let you add your vocals, FX etc and then let you master it to a WAV or MP3 file.

HD is still memory...persistent memory that is. Data is still there even if you turn off your computer. RAM data disappears on the other hand if you don't supply any voltage to it...

their are lots of types of RAM, for instance NVRAM is non-volatile RAM and doesn't lose data when you stop the power flow
can we get back to the subject?

If you're just starting, have you looked at Band-In-A-Box???
www.pgmusic.com (http://www.pgmusic.com)
All you have to do is input your chords and it will act as a complete backup band in various musical styles. Not a bad way to start.
