I'm sure the question has a hundred answers and they're all here somewhere, but someone take me from ground zero...... How do I get to a point where I can plug my guitar & amp into the computer and record tracks......Cheers.

Go to Borders or Barnes&Noble.
Find music books section.
Lots of books on guitar and should be some on recording.
Go to cafe and grab a coffee while reading.
Seriously, you'll learn more in 1/2 hour than all the posts you could find here on the basics. Electronic Musician magazine also ran a whole issue 2 months ago on recording guitars... you could order a back issue.

First, what KIND of guitar, electric or accoustic? If
its an electric, you might try to putting the mic up to
the amp. That might also be a good shot at getting a
better distorted sound than inside the computer.
Don't try to go directly from a guitar into a soundcard.
Generally, you'll need a preamp. A small mixer might
serve you well. I recently pulled out a $50 accoustic
guitar pickup I bought a long time ago. I had to go
from the pickup, into a direct in ("DI") box which
went from high impedence to low impedence then into
the mixer, then into the soundcard. And I STILL didn't
like the tone the pickup gave my guitar.
Guitars can be hard to get a good sound. And they
aren't going to sound any better than the mic. Just my
take.

ok let's see if this helps ya. first you will need a recording software program there are many but i think the best one
for you since being new to this would be Calkwalk's "guitar tracks 2" it has a user friendly interface plus it has all you need out of the box as in a 1/4 to 1/8 plug adapter so you can plug your guitar into your soundcard. well not much but i hope it helps ya

Cheers boys. This is enought to get me started. Sounds like keeping it simple to start is the way to go.
