well... if midi is your thing, then go with cubase...
if audio editing/automation, etc. then (with the choices given) pro tools...
but i recomend nuendo... has the super-tight audio engine that can dance circles around pro tools, and a pretty good midi engine too... plus, it's not all that expnsive, either...

This is a bit like comparing Apples and Oranges actually.

To make a proper comparison, you should like suggested previously, look at Nuendo and Pro Tools. In this case, might it be only for compatibility issues, Pro Tools would probably be the best choice.

If your looking for something that you can use to compose music, using real-time effects, audio tracks, automation, but also virtual instruments such as samplers, synthesizers and what not, Cubase VST is definately the software of choice (Cakewalk's Sonar also offers a similar solution but with less instruments available, not to mention it is not cross-platform compatible).

What Cubase handles best in terms of editing capability is MIDI. It's interface in this regard is superior to Pro Tools' interface. It is also compatible with a larger number of sound cards then Pro Tools is, offers more audio tracks and stereo interleave support. As Pro Tools, Cubase handles audio directly from your hard disk using an Audio Pool rather than a Bin. Different names, same features. You can modify audio in a general editing environment, make non-destructive editing in an Audio Editor or destructive editing in an Internal Wave Editor, just as Pro Tools does. If you need to further your audio editing, you can open your audio files in an external wave editor like Wavelab or Sound Forge.

As for the choice of effects, you can pick from any VST or DirectX compatible effects on the market. Pro Tools only supports effects written specifically for Pro Tools.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted on your choice and happy creation!

Apples vs oranges.

Cubase is basically a MIDI and audio sequencer - a tool for musicians and composers for constructing and mixing MIDI and audio sequences.

Protools is a multitrack audio recording and mixing tool with added MIDI.

Protools primarily replaces recording studio hardware.

Cubase primarily replaces manuscript paper and musicians, but can also replace recording studio hardware.
