Hi folks... I just ran into something that's news to me.

I'm publishing some mpgs online and get quite a lot of people who have problems playing them. The sound they say is basicly a big squeek. They play it in several types of players.

Only thing I can think of is that it might be the mpg format I use. it's simple 128kbs but at 48khz... could it be that they can't play 48khz on their prolly simple old machines?

Anyone familliar with this snag? cause I'd hate to have to convert it to 44.1 if that is the issue.

it has nothing to do with old systems... it is a basic result of mp3s encoded at 48kHz is no good... the players available only handle 44.1... and besides, a standard cd is 44.1... maybe it has something to do with the encoding process your taking... what software are you doing this with? and also what is the source material?

thx for the reply

I am using both Winlama and Soundforge when encoding.

The original source material is 24bit 48khz. I have to dither it down to 16bit before converting in Winlama which is no problem.

Maybe I ought to just record at 44.1 from now on... odd thing is that it seems to work fine on most machines... only some have problems.

But also thing is that I am thinking of recording at 96khz haven't decided if it's worth it yet... hmmm

Well it's something to keep in mind in the future... Whoever came up with 44.1 anyway. That's really the reason I use 48 now... 44.1 somehow seems unnatural. hehe

The only good reason to use 48kHz is if you have a SoundBlasterLive card which only works in 48kHz (and will resample your recording on-the-fly if you don't leading to funky things happening.) Just resample your mixdown in Soundforge to 16-bit/44.1kHz and then save it to MP3.

I'm sticking with 24bit/44.1kHz for recording, too.
