Sound File Database or Database Front end?

I've been looing for a way to catalog all my various sound files with information about where they're used.

Ideally this would be a relational database front end, or some sort of file system extension much like Corel used to make for media.

I know of a database that can stream media from within the database but I don't know of a way to make the files stored in the database available to audio applications from the file browsing interface.

Any ideas? How do you manage thousands of sound files?
