I saw a live demo of the bassman pedal going into a JC120 A/B'ed with a Fender Bassman reissue. It was closer than you'd expect. I'll bet that into another amp (with celestions vintage 30's for example), or direct, it would sound even closer. The high end of a C120 is too chimey to be utterly convincing. It's Certainly good enough for most applications. With the right amp, it could possibly be a "Live or Memorex?" moment. For the price ($150-175 street) It's a great deal.

So you really thought it sounded that good? Did they demo it in conjunction with any other pedals, say overdrive or reverb?

I saw the live demo at NAMM and was not convinced. I don't know what else they were using to make those vids, but that's not what it sounded like live. The guy doing the demo seemed to really believe the hype, and said something like "Joe Walsh used Deluxe Reverbs for years and all those tones are in this pedal" he proceeded to play Funk 49 and Rocky Mountain Way, it was such a joke I had to leave to stop myself from getting up and saying "you're jokeing right? that sounds like ass". The only reason I didn't say anything was coz it was the first day of NAMM, and I didn't want to get kicked out of the show.
The Bassman pedal sounded just as bad.

I thought the reason the Bassman pedal may have not sounded so great was the JC-120 the guy was playing it through.

good point, it's a big job to make those amps sound good with any kind of distortion.

I saw and heard the demos of both the '59 bassman pedal and the 65 deluxe reverb pedal, and I was blown away at how good the pedals sounded. They had a 59 Bassman RI and a Deluxe Reverb RI to A/B them with (the pedals were going through Roland JC-120's, probably the cleanest guitar amp made), and my opinion is that the pedals are jaw-droppingly realistic sounding. My point of reference is my vintage 63 Fender Tremolux. I also owned an original 65 Deluxe Reverb for many years. I think that anyone that ever wanted a 59 Bassman or 65 Deluxe reverb and can't afford the stiff price of these vintage amps needs to go try one of these pedals. I think Boss has a pair of winners here. :thu:

Well I've got a '64 Deluxe that has been my main amp for about 5 years, and I thought the pedals sounded awful.

Well, different strokes, as they say. I heard the pedals demo'ed with Strats, and they sounded like the real deal. When I was there, the place was crowded with people listening, nodding and smiling. I walked over to the demo wall too, and strapped on a Strat and headphones, and played through the pedals myself. To me, they got everything right. Anyone interested in owning one of these Fender amps should go try the pedals and decide themselves whether they still want to spend a couple grand on an amp or gas money on one of these pedals.

Well I heard both of them and the Deluxe to me sounded awful. The guy let me play with the knobs on the Bassman and I was quite impressed. They had a bassman there to A/B and I really liked the sound. I am getting one.

So, you played it through headphones -- was it going through some kind of practice amp, or just straight to headphones? I was wondering if they work for direct recording as well as through an amp.

I think it was just a regular headphone amp, so I think the pedals will work fine for direct recording.
The Roland JC-120 is really a clean (too clean IMHO) amp, which is why I think they used it for the main demos - so the listener could hear the pedals without coloration from an amp.

I really want to play thru one myself and see if I like it. I am not opposed to modeling and the web demo was really impressive.

gay. I suck at quoting.
I guess the question is, are the two new Boss Fender Deluxe Reverb / Bassman pedals are any better than the latest modelers such as the DigiTech GSP1101 or the Boss GT8.
For all we know, the two new Boss pedal's modeling algorithms are not much different than the existing modeling algorithms as found in the Boss GT8. Or maybe the new DigiTech GSP1101 can do as well or better with those Fender sounds.
That would make the two new Boss-Fender pedals not very impressive or cost effective as compared to the versatility of the latest modelers because the two of them will cost you $338.00 including two Boss PSA120’s.

Practice on the amp you have while you save your money to buy a real Fender amp...... I'm glad I did. :thu:

I bought the FDR-1 on Thursday and I'm absolutely thrilled. With the gain rolled off, I'm getting some of my best clean tones ever.
good point, it's a big job to make those amps sound good with any kind of distortion.
Wh...wh...wh..WHAT???
OK, I'm new here so I don't want to instantly get labeled as a dick or anything, but what are you smoking?
Just because the JC-120 has a great clean sound doesn't mean you can't make it sound good with "any kind of distortion"
You may not personally like it's sound, but go back and listen to:
The Cult
Love and Rockets
A Flock of Seagulls
The Psychedelic Furs
Sisters of Mercy
The Mission U.K.
...And a whole ton of others and I think you may retract that statement.
The JC-120 can sound EVIL when properly motivated.
Back on topic though... That Bassman pedal sounded very expressive.

I just heard both pedals through a VOX AC15 running clean.
I would have to say each pedal acted like a noise gate and compressed the sound some.
The AC15 sure sounded better without the pedals.

Bomp for Dragonsoni's mention of the Vox AC15 (of course I'm referring to the British made TBX model) :thu:
The way I see it, why pay for hardware when you can use software like Guitar Rig or Amplitube. As a keyboard player I bring my MacBook Pro with me to gig for the keyboard sounds. It's much cheaper than buying a Nord Electro.

I like the sound of the FBM on those demos - assuming that it sonuds as close as that "live", I'd be happy to use one. That said, though, a lot would come down to the price. While it seems to nail the Bassman sound, if I found another pedal that was as responsive and sounded as good for much less, I wouldn't feel the need to spend the extra on the Boss. I'd like to A/B one of those with a Bad monkey out of curiosity. Somethingl ike that in front of a nice tranny amp with a good clean tone would be good..... I wish Fender would reissue the 90s Bronco Tweed Amp, maybe in a larger 30w format. Something like that with a pedal or two of this quality would be great - I'd much rather that than tubes, personally. YMMV, of course.
I do wonder how many people will (as some have above) dismiss these pedals out of hand as "not the real thing" without even considering them.
