eon vs. peavey pr powered leading to yorkville question...

So, for my curiosity only. What would you pros here consider a better powered box of the EON or PR (powered version)?

I had a chance recently to listen to both....and my ears don't have much good to say about the EON's. the horn seemed harsh, the lows were weak. Could it be they were being pushed too hard or is that a characteristic they display? Really didn't care for the sound at all from any distance. (dj application)

Now, the PR series in DJ and karaoke....WOW what a difference. Are they really better sounding or did I get treated to an idiot running the EON's?

The EON was the 15" model, the PR was the 12" model.

Now, compared to the Peavey.....is the Yorkville powered line noticably better?? I'd love to own a set if they are....heck, I'd like two per side for just in case, and four as wedges, maybe even a pair for side fill.

Ditto. Not sure which version of the Eon's I've heard, but I've heard them a couple of times.

EON's can definitely be made (EQ'd) to sound fine. I'm assuming you didn't hear the EON vs the PR in the same room, in and A/B comparison, so it's impossible to know the variables in question.

It seems a common complaint that powered speakers sound 'harsh'. In my experience it's usually because they are pushed hard, and then EQ'd heavily to either avoid feedback or give a better "DJ" sound. This usually results in the harsh upper mids being emphasized.

The PR is in a rather lower pricepoint than the EON. A more direct comparison if you're in the EON budget would be the Peavey Impulse line. Somewhere between them and the PR is the Samson db500a, a 15" speaker that's surprisingly nice.

I am no pro, so you may not wish to hear from me, and I have no real experience with the Peavey speakers that you are talking about but I did A/B the JBLs against some EV powered boxes EV SXA100) and found that I l.iked the sound of the EV boxes better... I even bought some, and at the same time ordered one yorkville NX 550 Powered box, and when it came, it was much nicer sounding than the EVs.. just warmer, really nice. So I sent back all of the EV's (except one which was past it's satifaction warantee date), and bought in the end 6 of the yorkville boxes, which I have used in varying ways, and with never any complaints.

I am sure that the elite line sounds even better, but they are heavier, and for the acoustic music that I am typically involved in, the NX line is plenty good enough.

Now I really think that any of these speakers would be "good enough" for most applications. There is no A/B comparison at a job, and if things sound good, usually that is enough. For full out Rock and Roll, you might need quite a few of the powered boxes to achieve the amount of head room that would permit you to really enjoy the sweet sound of things, but providing you had enough, any of them would work fairly well I would think. They are all pretty nice cabintets.

I use to play at a club that used all Yorkville PA speakers and I loved the sound. Smooth, full and powerful. Similar to some Cerwin Vegas that I heard in another club. :thu:
