I have a B&W G3/300 w/ OS 8.6.
I want to upgrade.........which is the most reliable for music? I have purchased 9.04 and can upgrade to 9.2.
Which version of OS9 should I install?
This is a brand new out of the box machine wo I can do a clean install.

Thanks,

With a G3 300... I think with 8.6 or even 9.04, you're best staying around there. I have read that people had problems with 9.2. I can attest to that. Also, many professionals are using the older OS 8 and early 9's, so you should be fine with that for now.

I usually upgrade late...after all of the bugs are out of the OS.

I'm running OS 9.1 on my G4 and my iMac 350 and it's VERY stable AND all of my older audio software runs fine (Deck II, Peak, etc...).

I'm not convinced that 9.2 is cool yet AND it might only be stable while installed on a machine w/ OS X.

For anything older than a G4 most software manufacturers will tell you to stick to 8.6 for speed reasons unless you have a program that requires some version of OS 9.

Wow, great forum...

I am in exactly the same situation, and I came here looking for answers and here they are....

I am in the process of moving over to the dark side....(PC to MAC)

I just purchased an iMac 400SE DV with OS 8.6...I'd like to try an emagic MT4USB interface, and the emagic emi 2/6..their minimum requirement is 9.04 or later...so from the above posts I assume if I upgraded to 9.1 I should be in good shape...correct??

But to take it one step further, next month or so Logic 5.0 debuts, and is scheduled to support OS X....I plan to upgrade to 5.0, so, my question is, must 9.2.1 be installed before OS X, or, when the time comes to install OS X, can I simply install it over 9.1??

Even on older Mac's (200mhz+) 9.04 or 9.1 is faster and mouch more stable than 8.6. Don't stay on 8.6. I think on a B&W G3 9.04 is better than 9.1. I'm not quite sure though! And I don't know why!!??

9.1 is rock solid for audio (and anything els)

i use OS9. it's not solid as a rock, but solid enough. i don't have any experience with 8.6, so this is as far as i can help u.

I used to work on a B&W300, started with 8.6 on it and then bumped it to 9.1. Didn't notice any difference in speed, and 9.1 was just as stable for me, except for a few initial extension issues I had to iron out. 9 doesn't have a lot of new features, but if you've got a license handy, I'd give 9.1 the nod. I never regretted it.

When it comes to X, give it as clean an install as you can. Of course, what you do depends on whether you want to dual-boot 9/X, but if X is all you'll use, reformat the drive and go from scratch. You'll need X on a separate partition anyway.

new to these forums but not to Mac or sound or the Apple forums (discussions). in fact for contributions at Apple they gave me OS 9.0b9 a developers version. it's as stable as any i've used so far. running it on an iBook 300/160M and a DV400/386M. ProTools Free runs great on these and also on my Q660 A/V/68M (accellerated) running 7.5.5 (much engineered).

9.0.4 and 9.1 or even 9.2 run well after some tweaks. OS X is still waiting for third party software developers to catch up

humble 2¢

For what it's worth. I have done 8.1 to 9.2.1 (and OSX10.1.1) and haven't suffered any adverse effects. I think that could be to do with the software I use as I try and keep it up to date. The OS works the same for me all the way through the upgrades with regard to music apps. I suspect that problem you may have is if some of the apps you are used to using, don't support new Os's. Some investigation should sort that out though..!

All the reports that I've heard is that 10.1.1 and 9.2.1 should go hand-in-hand as each is a compliment to the other so to speak.
Early versions of OS X and 9.1 are fine but if you're going to upgrade, go all the way to what's current. Stability and speed are both improved over earlier versions.

I'm staying at 9.1 (because everything WORKS) until I'm positive that the upgrade will be painless.

I just got OS-X for Christmas. I upgraded from OS 8.6. This is how I understand it after 1 week.

OS-X will not run OS9 or earlier applications on its own. It does have a "Classic" Mac emulator that can run some applications designed to run on pre-OS-X systems.

For this emulator to work, you will need to have OS-9.2 istalled (in addtion to OS-X).

Of course, for maximum stability, you should not use the emulator--just choose to boot the system in OS-9 instead of OS-X.

I guess if you don't plan to use the "Classic" emulator--meaning that you will just boot the computer into one operating system or the other--it wouldn't matter if that other OS was 8.6, 9.1, or 9.2. I don't know. But I think you need 9.2 for the emulator within OS-X.

I'll shut up now!

I was a long time 8.6 holdout but just migrated to 9.2.1 and everything is fine, my g3 450 is noticeabley faster. OS X HAS A LONG WAY TO GO.

However, 2 ultra serious Mac OS caveats:

1) DO NOT UPGRADE TO OS 9.2.2 I REPEAT: DO NOT UPGRADE TO OS 9.2.2. THINGS THAT WORKED BEFORE WILL NO LONGER WORK, AND YOUR LIFE WILL BE REDUCED TO A HAIR-PULLING HOWL OF NIGHTMARES AND MYSTERIOUS PHONE CALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

2) DO NOT INSTALL OSX ON A MACHINE RUNNING PROTOOLS. I REPEAT: DO NOT INSTALL OSX ON A MACHINE RUNNING PROTOOLS, EVEN ON A SEPERATE PARTITION OR HARD DRIVE. OSX WILL CORRUPT (YES I SAID CORRUPT) YOUR PROTOOLS FILES. THIS "FEATURE" OF OS X IS DOCUMENTED ON THE PROTOOLS SUPPORT WEBSITE, ALONG WITH MANY OTHER SERIOUS WARNINGS.

9.2.1 is MUCH BETTER than 9.1. 9.1 IS MUCH BETTER than 9, 9.02 and 9.04, which is C R A P.

That is all.

9.1 for me. Only bummer is upgrading some of my software, like Norton. Very stable, even with too many inits.
