Hi;
I just got a G4 400(384MB RAM, 2X hard disks( 10 + 20 GB) )
And two 17 inch screens with two video cards.

I am planning to sell one of the hard disks and get a 40Gb hard disk in its place.

What hard disks would you reccomend? What trasference speed is best (or required ) for making music on the mac.Thanks.

Don't buy Maxtor unless you don't care about your data.

Seagate quality has been ok. I use a slew of 9Gb, 18Gb and 36Gb Cheetah's at work and only one 36Gb has been troublesome.

I prefer the old Quantum Atlas line but Quantum is no-mas (swallowed up by Maxtor).

I've had good luck with IBM drives as well.

Thanks for the advice.I just bought my second hand G4 400 yesterday.And I putting another hard disk in. I have found a good deal on a IBM Deskstart 60 GXP ( 7200rcp).What you think?

IBM's one of the best when it comes to hard drives. This from a little personal experience and a lot of second-hand info. I've owned several Seagate drives and never had any problems with them. Setting up HDs always takes me a little longer than it should, but that's just because I have issues with termination (so says my shrink, anyway).

Try to pull down MacBench or some other benchmarking program and see what your disk scores are. That's probably the easiest way to test your actual performance..

Hey,
someone said that to not get MAXTOR. But go to barefeats.com.scroll down and select the topic: Fastest ata drives for under 200$. There are a few graphs comparing speeds.Take a look at it.
I am very on the point of getting the Maxtor Diamond Plus D740X (6L080L4). Check it out and tell me what you want.

I got a Cheetah 18Gb -10,000 rpm (for $159 from PowerOn Computing) and it rocks. Not the quietest drive, but mounted internally it's fine.

I researched this for some time recently and nearly bought the IBM deskstar 40 gigger but was wowed by the new Fujitsu MPG3409AH 40 gigger due to it's increase processing speed and virtual silence. I can't recommend this enough now. I can't hear the drive at all and it's so much faster than the WD that remains my system drive..

Nothing against the Deskstar.. It was just beaten by the Fujitsu in tests..
