Yeah seems like a viable alternative to any firewire system. MOTU828 is affordable, but has limitations. MeticHalo's got a unit out, but it's very expensive.
My friend owns a Layla20 that he loves, so I can only assume that the Layla24's even better. And the fact that it has cardbus interface is even better.
For the record, I own a MOTU828 and if it weren't for convience sake, I'd own something else (either the PCMCIA based Layla24 or RME unit).
