I'm looking for a simple way to get a melody line on to sheet music.

I'd like to get a MIDI box and hook up my wife's keyboard to the iMac and get a (<$100) software package to roughly translate the melody line I play to a staff after I enter key and time signature.

What software packages exist that can do this? I don't need any other bells and whistles.

There are a few options for you:

A dedicated 'notation software' like Coda:
Finale about $150; Print Music Millenium about $60.
Or
You can buy a 'lite version' dedicated audio application which is more versatile and lets you compose multiple tracks and print score:
MicroLogic (about $80) or CubasisVST about the same.
However, I think the score functions in Logic are better than in Cubase.

Actually Finale has an entry level product, Notepad, which might do what you need it to do. And it's free. The full Finale family consists of:

Notepad - free, minimal features
Printmusic - $60, a bit more
Allegro - ~$150 still more
Finale - ~$300 will put just about anything on a staff.

I didn't know that, Dhosek.

Thanks for the info!

This is great. I'll check these out over the weekend.
