First off, anyone out there using the above setup? How's it working out for you?

Also, I need (purchase) recommendations on:

- Magma laptop bus adaptor
- quiet, good sounding LE plug-ins (compression, eq, delays, & reverb)
- MasterList (or other studio-standard CD burning software)
- routine session-file backup methodology & media choices
- extension settings (FOR THE ABOVE CONFIGURATION ONLY)

Thanks.

Hmmmm....

I have a G4 desktop running Logic Audio so my setup is slightly different although much the same idea. In my experience with backups for starters, I save 'everything' song/audio/edits in one folder named by the name of the track. I save the song before every edit or track addition. At the end of the session, I would consider whether to back that folder up to a CDRW or CD. If it's too large, then use something like Retrospect to spread it over some CD's. Use verify if you want, it depends on how much this material is worth to you and is therefore subjective. Toast is a Mac favourite or something like Adaptec 'Jam' for creating custom CD's with song fades etc. As far as I can tell, iTunes seems to be moving more along the Jam lines with iTunes 2. We will have to wait and CD. That's for finished songs to album anyway. As far as extensions are concerned, I leave all of mine on as I rarely get any conflicts that affect music. If you are having problems, then either buy Conflict Catcher, or turn the extensions to 'OS Base' in extensions manager and then see what works (ProTools extensions on) and then take it from there. I would leave them be if the program is operating normally otherwise you may create a problem that isn't there.

That's all I can give..!

Don't have that configuiration but I use ProTools.

Are you only considering the Magma to add a soundcard for audio input? Have you seen the VXpocket?

For plug-ins, there is nothing better than the BombFactory stuff
CD burning, I'd have to go with Emagic's WaveBurner Pro especially since the new update supports more firewire CD burners.

For backup, I use a dedicated firewire harddrive and always practice weekly defragging and Norton or TechTool system checks (you know there's a free version of TechTool Lite, right? www.versiontracker.com) (http://www.versiontracker.com))

As far as extensions, I don't know what you have on your drive but as a rule:
Turn off ethernet and Appletalk and make sure 'ethernet' is not active in the TCP/IP (set it to PPP)
Disable 'Sound' from the Appearance panel
Put disk cache at 512k (in Memory panel)
Only use Chicago or Charcol fonts in Appearance panel
Reduce to monitor to 256 colors

I keep thinking I'm missing something but that's all the time I have.

bmcmahan: how is it you're using a Digi001 with your iBook? Isn't the Digi001 a PCI interface?

As far as I know the Magma cardbus option is only available on laptops that have a PCMCIA slot (i.e. cardbus) which the iBook does not have. Looks like your only options are USB or Firewire.
