Hi all. I'm currently making music on a PC, and was considering a Mac for my next purchase. I though an iMac would be cost-effective, but I can't find a USB-only hardware/software solution. SBlive and OmniStudio both require PCI slots. I need one MIDI and one audio input. I assume the iMac audio input is not up to snuff for quality recordings, or am I wrong? Any hw/sw suggestions, or is the G4 the only way to go? Thanks in advance for info.

There are plenty of USB audio devices out there by MAudio, Emagic and Aardvark. However the Firewire Motu 828 is supposed to be nice. Mind you none of these are midi/audio combo's.
You'd have to buy them separately.

Looking at the site you mentioned, wouldn't the USB AudioSport Quattro qualify as having both MIDI and audio?

Take a look at the Tascam US-428 , a midi and audio USB box that also has cool sliders to control your sequencer .It apparently works very well. Look at www.tascam.com (http://www.tascam.com)

The Tascam is a nice unit although I have never used it, I like the idea. I would say though that M-Audio are good at Mac support and it's a pretty safe place to be...

Ive heard bad things about USB and audio. Firewire for the iMac is definately the way forward. have a look at the reviews in Sound on Sound's website. www.sospubs.co.uk. (http://www.sospubs.co.uk.) I would definately go for a G4 over an iMac for recording audio, just because of the expansion possibilities, and the small screen size. It may not sound important now but it will be when oyu start using it, and eventaully want to expand which you almost certainly will!
Get a G4. It' s the only way to fly. of course if you only need one midi in and one audio in get a taperecorder with a midi interface.lol.
No really, a G4 will always be better off. If you get an imac you will be crippled from the start. If you want to get something good. That will allow you to record something good.G4 and MOTU 828. otherwise just stick to the midi interfaced tape recorder.
