Looks like Digidesign is expanding the Mbox line yet again. There is the Mbox 2 and the recently announced Mbox 2 Pro, and now the Mbox Mini:

$329 list. More info here. (http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=48&itemid=23890&langid=100&action=news_details&ref=mini-a)

That is awesome. I know I'm being picky, but the first M-Box was just a little too big for laptop editing on the run. This seems perfect.

Another example of Digi's forced sidegrade upgrades. The original M-box is no longer supported, forcing users who are now hooked into purchasing hardware they only need to stay software compliant. The original M-box had 2 killer mic pres, replaced by some pretty medeocre ones in the M-box 2. For those who don't need the pre, well for only $300 more you can still use the latest software.

Screw them, Digi will never get another dime of my money.

keep in mind that LE is not Digidesign's main product. sure, they sell a shit-ton of them, but it's certainly not where they spend all of their money on development, and they probably make a lot more dough on HD rigs.

As far as "sidegrades", Pro Tools HD has kept the same hardware for much longer than any MBox has been around, and also has options for using converters with option cards from OTHER manufacturers like apogee, lynx, prism, mytek, etc. that will interface directly with the HD cards.

sorry, it's just kind of like you're saying "Mexican strats used to have better tuning pegs! now you pay $50 more for a Mexican model x and the tuning pegs aren't as good!"

I wasn't talking about HD I was talking about the Le interfaces, sorry I didn't make that clear. However it's not anything like your mexican strat reference at all. The original M-box had 2 killer Focusrite pres in it, the M-box 2 has 2 very eh pres in it. Yes it has midi, but seriously how many traveling engineers are carrying a sample rack and a keyboard? The only reason Digi stopped support for the original m-box was profit motivated. They want to FORCE users who are now locked into PTle to spend more money. I'll bet the house within a year to 18 months tops they do the same with the 002 and 002R.

While they make a good nut on HD, don't count out PTle, they sell a shitload of them.

I will admit that I am not a fan of Pro Tools. Not of the company or the software.

But.....

At $300 it might just be worth it just for the sole purpose of accepting projects started on PT and then consolidating them and importing them into software I like. I really only need two features: A) the consolidate button and b) stereo outputs so I can check what I'm doing. I don't really care about anything else... and this has very little else :)
