1996 Taylor Koa Grand Concert Acoustic Guitar 712 koa
Amazing and rare Robert Taylor grand concert in excellent condition. Beautiful Koa back and sides with solid close-grained cedar top. One-piece mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, colorful abalone soundhole rosette, and deluxe inlays on neck. It’s built like a k-12, with the simpler 712 binding and the more complex cedar top.
This grand concert has wonderfully complex harmonics and well balanced tone. It has an intriguing, dark pearly bass with a warm, responsive midrange, and a nice treble sparkle. The highly responsive solid cedar top has nicely aged – and notes spring from the soundboard. The combination of the quick responsive top plus the warmth and complexity of Koa makes this guitar awesome for fingerstyle, blues, jazz, celtic, and Hawaiian. This guitar rings sweetly when slacked to Hawaiian/Celtic tunings. It’s a terrific instrument.
If you’re old school like me – and think the original Talylor solid mahogany neck sounds better than the new Taylor finger-joint necks, then you should pay additional attention to this offering. The solid slab of mahogany chosen for this neck has beautiful grain – and is among the most comfortable necks I have ever played. The action is low – and the neck feels so good – it feels a little like cheating when playing this guitar – it’s so effortless. This grand concert also has the original grand concert body shape – which I think was a major achievement, and one that should not have been tampered with – as he has done on the new models. My opinion.
This instrument is part of my cherished collection of acoustics. It sits importantly in the ranks of my small bodied Gibsons, Martins, and Taylors - and I never thought I would part with it. I have two other Koa Taylors that nicely compliment this one – an original GAKS and a K-22. This instrument fits in the narrow tonal space between those two instruments. I’m reluctantly selling it to raise the insane amount of money I’m about to drop on the ultimate Ramirez 1a.
This instrument is in excellent condition. I see no marks or scratches or wear on it, period. It looks brand spanking new - some would say “minty”. Maintained always in my temperature- and humidity-controlled music room in my non-smoking house. Comes complete with the original Taylor hard-shell case - also in excellent condition.
Serial# 961114xxx, which I believe makes it a 1996?
