ok, I have a good idea of what I have to do, but I don't know how to get into bios!

I can get into some setup & configuration utility thing, but I don't think it's bios.

For some stupid reason my cpu does'nt do the thing where there's like a lil energy saving logo or whatever for a bit then it fades out and it all starts up.

I need to figure out how to get that thang back too, cause it does some kinda test where it goes thru some numbers and that could be handy.

So yeah, does anyone know what to press or hold down to get into bios? And how to get that basic startup test thing back?

For most computers you press either the Delete , Eac or F2 key on initial startup. Some computers like Dells have a startup screen that hides the boot details. On the ones I have worked with you have to hit the Tab key to see the startup details and then hit one of the other keys I mentioned.

Good luck
Erich

No, that sounds like it is the BIOS settings...

eep!

ok, to get into that thing, it's called setup & configuration utility, I press F1.

The thing is, if that is BIOS, I can't find what I need to find in there... :(

The computer starts up, the first visible screen has in big big blue letters I B M on it, and down the bottom left corner, press F1 for setup and configuration thang, then F12 for boot from network.

After that is kicks into windows and all hope is lost.

Just what IS the deal?

Errr... what exactly is it that you want to find? It does sound like that's the BIOS, but it's also possible that it could be some sort of 3rd party boot manager program. Typically the BIOS will have sections to define the fixed disks/CDROMs connected to the machine, aswell as sections to set the system clock, set passwords, etc... Also the text will usually be in 'DOS style' (for want of a better description) text (though not usually blank and white). The other thing to remember is that big manufacturers like IBM, dell, compaq, etc... will often have a heavily cut-down BIOS to prevent users from overclocking CPUs or setting more agressive memory timings...

aww fuck if that's the case

I'm looking to disable the onboard sound card thing so I can just use my audiowerks card.

**sigh**

Goddammit, why won't it just work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would usually be enabled/disabled in a section callled 'integrated peripherals' (or similar). If you don't have this, you can disable the onboard sound through the device manager...

ok, i shall give that a crack, but as far as I memba, I think I've tried that somewhere. Maybe not tho.

It's not an actual Soundblaster, it's something called soundmax, but it's still built into the motherboard/green chippy gizzmo.

And in this bios type thing, I've looked and searched and I'm pretty sure there's no integrated periferals menu.

More importantly; why does it have to be so FREEEEEEEAKING hard?
