View Full Version : Chicken Monkey's self-duet

I've got a female singer in the new band, so I wanted to do some boy-girl duets. This is the first of a few that I've worked out.

I've done both the male and female vocals (sped up the female vocal to get it a bit higher and so it didn't sound as much like me), so, obviously, this is not radio ready. The lyrics are halfway between finished product and just filling space. I like the tag line and "This wedding ring...", and I'm in love with my opening line, though it's probably far too scenery-chewing for the final song.

In short, I'm not ready for any criticism re: production or lyrics. I'd like to know what you think about subject matter, duet structure, and melody/chord progression (minus a few obvious vocal clams).

It is titled "So What Do We Do Now?" It's the first track on my soundclick page, at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=484769

I re-recorded it, and I think this version may still sound OK to me tomorrow. That's not to say it's perfect, but it gets the idea across, and features my recorded debut playing the jug. And straight harmonica, which sounds a little "Home On the Range"y. Other than that, the feedback request in my previous post applies. Thanks for any help.

Hey, rhat, if you saw that I was from GR, you were on my myspace page, which didn't have the song I'm looking for feedback on. I modified the original post to include a link.

I'm just rehearsing with a new band now, so we probably won't be gigging until fall, but I'll keep it in mind if we can land a slot at Bells or something.

Thanks ....it would be fun to catch one of your shows ,, when you start getting some gigs. I did like that first track on you space....You could really zoot that up with a full brass and some vocal harmony ......Its a smooth groove.. the bridge needs a little change i think.... and the solos sounded like overdub jumble....but the basic song i think is a winner........

I have been just starting to play with overdub vocal harmony...and have started to lay down the rhythm and lead vocal on the same track in one pass. I dub in the lead guitar and bass. rat

What, you guys have never heard a man singing a duet with his self? Give it a try, you might like it.

You need Emmylou Harris, not Alvin the singing country chipmunk. The bass sounds a little weird. and the sound of tape hiss makes me crazy.

But the song has good bones, and I'm sure that a full band version with a real female singer will be great.

Thanks for excavating this--I really need some feedback. I would be in a very happy place if the problems you cite are all I have to worry about. The chipmonks voice and tape hiss both stem from the sped-up-tape approach, which is obviously just a place-holder. By the bass sound, I wasn't sure if you meant the guitar part, playing the boogie riff, or the jug part, which sounds a bit like a bass drum.

that harmonica was nails on a chalkboard- tune up! v trad song, a full arrangement will sound good, great change at 1-25, don't like the opening line sorry! have you got a lady lined up to sing it with you or will that let a cat of the bag!?

Hey Chicken I didn't know you were into country? This tune has a definite old country sound to it. It's not really my style but I can appreciate it. As far as duet structure, I think it worked out like it's supposed to, you seemed to switch up the lines well. That said I think you might be a better singer than her...

I couldn't catch all the lyrics as I'm at work and I can't turn it up loud enough for that. sorry.

The melody and chord structure seemed to be par for the genre. But again remember that this is not my style.

I like the idea of the harmonica solo-but I don't think it worked here. Maybe rework the solo cause that could be badass.

by the way I love "keep your skillet greasy", it's catchy, funny, and vocals are well done.

I thought this post had run its course--I hope my other post was not seen as a cheap ploy for attention. I do have a female singer in my band, so if I can get them to do the song, she'll sing the second part. Likewise with the harmonica--that would be a fiddle solo live. I was tuned up, but that poor harmonica has been totally warped by my cross-harping on it. Thanks for the feedback, and Geno, thanks for listening to some of the other stuff. The band has been doing "Skillet" for awhile now, with a bass break and kazoo solo. It's a lot of fun.

See now that would be alot of fun. A Kazoo solo! Chicken you've gotta post a version of that. Did anyone ever catch the Eric Clapton unplugged show-one of the songs has a Kazoo part. It's just makes the song 60% funner....

and a fiddle solo for "So what do you do now" would be a nice touch.
