Guys I used to emulate:
Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, Jeff Pacoro, Phil Collins, Russ Kunkel, Jim Keltner, Alan White, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, Carl Palmer, Max Weinburg, Mick Fleetwood, Stan Getz, Alan Kratzner, Don Henley, Chester Thompson,

But even guys like Peter Criss and Karen Carpenter have influnced me. It's the guys that play drums for the Moody Blues, Vince Gill, Alabama, Patsy Cline, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Sister Hazel, Stevie ray Vaughn, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Counting Crows, James Blunt, Etc.

It's just when I hear a good song with a good beat with a good drummer playing it helps influnce my playing. Like I can hear Anne Murray's drummer in "you needed me" or "could I have this dance" and the drums sound nice and it's like I tell myself "you know, those drums sound really nice and simple and really add to the song and I love the sweet simple sound he's playing"

So I'm influnced by all different things around me. So the guys I tried to emulate were guys that really shaped me but I KNOW I left a lot out!

Also it wasn't just them. It's just so much! Like Little River Band and Air Supply to Whitesnake and Quiet Riot as well. Just too much to list. Hope this makes sense......

OK, here's the serious reply.

Dave Garibaldi - learned that the hi hat or ride don't have to be played just with straight quarter, eighth or sixteenth notes. (Soul Vaccination anyone?)

Steve Gadd - learned what it means to play tastefully.

If I gotta get serious and join this beat to death discussion... I'd have to say guys like Ringo, Helm, Kunkle, Rudd, Al Jackson Jr, etc... I'm more impressed by guys that played with taste and knew that sometimes you have to leave a little empty space around the groove. There are a loads of guys, famous guys... who played huge kits and wild fills every other measure. And while much of it was applicable to the music, the guys I listed above did the same by keeping steady time and playing tastefully. I like that.
