anyone been keeping up with this? Apparently, Tim Caswell is making handmade #39 amps :caswell amplification (http://caswellamps.studioelectronics.com/index.html)

Is he the same Caswell involved in Soldano's X-99 project?

Yep, and these #39 amps are ALSO motorized so you can save presets :)

I took the liberty to post your info at HRI... Might interest some people there. It sure looks very interesting... but pricy !!

Surely those motors are gonna add a ton of noise and interferance every time they turn .... or its just really expensive!
It cant be that quick changing presets either. I hear people bitch about the swell switching channels on DSLs and Rectos, so i dont know how quick this is gonna be
Im interested in hearing one though

I have a Soldano/Caswell X99 with motorized pots. I guess he used the same motors and overall design. If that's the case, there is no noise at all, even when the pots turn. In fact, it is the least noisy guitar preamp I've ever heard. And it is very quick : about 1/10s between 2 presets. The motors are real real fast.

I kept up on it. I contacted them by phone and email. I was told he was getting things together to start modding again.
He told me when they were ready that it would be posted on their website, and that everyone that inquired about it would receive an email. So, I gave my email address and phone number and made it clear that I wanted on whatever waiting list they may have. I checked their site for a year. I couldn't wait to send them my 2204.
I never saw anything on their site, and haven't heard anything from them by email.
Oh well. My Marshall's gone and I'm over it.

Ive got news for you, if the amp sounds like any of his marshall mods, he is going to loose money. My friend Frankie had a few caswell modded marshalls and they sounded horrible IMHO.

I have to agree. I do think the motorized pots are a great idea though. I've got 'em on my Yamaha DG and the interface is definitely the best found on any modeling amp.

Horrible ? Could you describe the tone in more details please ? What did you not like about it ? I'm really interested by the Caswell amp features. It's a whole new concept, especially the part where you can apparently tweak the circuit to your taste just by programming. I think there may be an vast array of transistors/caps that you can switch in and out in various part of the circuit...

Hey!!
Franks amps were modified with the mod that George Lynch supposedly had done by Tim. When I got to play the amp it sounded thin and shrill and had way less gain then what you would think for a modded Marshall (not that Frankie was expecting a boatload of gain!!)
To be honset with you, The amp was so bright that it hurt and when you turned down the treble, the gain went way down.
The amplifire also had ZERO and I mean ZERO sustain unless you cranked it to ungodly loud volumes.
The Caswell Mod reminded me of a stock Marshall but with a little more gain and added highs/mids. Frankie sold them quickly after he saw me play with a stock Marshall and a Graphic EQ.
To end on a more positive level, I'm sure that Tim has learned a lot more now. keep in mind that this was the early 80's!!

IMO, that is probably one of the worst sounding amps I have ever heard. It's buzzy, it's compressed, it's got no balls or sustain whatsoever. And now knowing what these things cost, IMO, there's no way in hell I'd ever own one. Hell, I wouldn't buy one if it cost $500, let alone $5000. The dude can play, though. I like his style. Amp sounds like crap and this video shows that nicely. I sure hope they sound better live, because that sounded like shit to me.

the sound is a little low for me to make a decision..i might would buy the mod for 500 bucks and have someone install it..unless he does that for 500
but i just dont know about all that motorized elec. stuff..looks like a cross between a vetta and a tube amp lol

not knocking his playing...but to sell an amp like that chickn' pickn' pluckn' really isnt the way...power cords and some simple riffage might be better
anybody thinking of the having the $595 mod done to their 4 holer?? that i might would like

Exactly
Most people who might have an interest in his amps might be looking for more rock tones like something from Appetite for Destruction?

if the sound is good, this amp would be totally worth it.
think about how much money you would have to spend on amps to reach the equivalent amount of channels.
the highest number channel tube amp i can think of is a triamp, six channels.
128/6= 21 1/3
that means that you would have to buy twenty-one triamps, plus one two channel amp to reach the equivalent.
21 triamps is $63,000.

I will be patiently waiting until someone I know in a forum can play it in person and report. If the sound is great, I think the asking price is fair. I have a X99 and the Caswell motorized pot technology is really awesome. Perfect ergonomy. Engineering at its finest. It can't come cheap. It works, plain and simple. It's reliable (unlike a Vetta). My preamp is 10 years old and never broke. I use it everyday and the previous owner did a lot a touring with it. It says something.

i know he would rather sell the high dollar amp..but what would be sweet is if he got a good deal on some marshalls and installed the SIR mod and have a few in stock like david bray does so instead of buying an amp or sending an amp you already have to tim for the mod you could just buy one with it already on there and save some time
have a few 100w lying around and some 50w

well there are two more vids of the new amp...same chickn pickn shit...
im sorry but i very seriously doubt chickn pickn players would even know what the sir 39 amp is...thats just not the type sound thats will sell a $4700 amp or his sir marshall mod..he can play but most people who are in the know are gonna be thinking lynch and slash type tunes oh well his site ..he can do what he wants :D

I played through a Voodoo V-Plex today that had the Voodoo "Jose Mod" done to it. THIS amp has the Lynch/Slash tone to a "T" - and at less than 1/2 the price of a Caswell :thu:
The amp belonged to the dude from Stryper. Tons of sustain but with an EQ that actually worked (no ice pick high end like on other Jose-influenced amps [e.g., Blockhead])

hmph gadgetry... the way i see it, you have a ton of tonal variations with a pickup switch, several pickups, a volume pot and your hands.
sometimes ppl should just play...
