Hi -
I am looking to purchase a baritone sax as a retirement present for a special friend of mine. I am not a sax player, and really don't know anything about saxiphones.
My friend loves jazz - - e.g. Gerry Mulligan. Do you have any recommendations regarding the best baritone sax in the $4,000 - $5,000 range ? Also, is there a reputable place where I could purchase a used, high-quality baritone sax ???
Thank you for your help !

Yamaha's are always good instruments as are the Conn's and Yanigasawa's. As far as places, look at Taylor Music (http://www.1800usaband.com) or Woodwind Brasswind (http://www.wwbw.com) . I've used both places and have found them both to have good deals. If you're not in a big hurry Taylor can be an excellent source as they deal in some used and refurbished instruments at fantastic prices, but it's a matter of what they have or what they are in the process of fixing.

I've been pondering buying myself a used bari sax but my budget is considerably lower. I certainly don't need a "pro" quality instrument, and it doesn't have to be all shiny. It would end up being just livingroom playing for my own enjoyment.
There are often old Beuschers, Conns, etc on ebay that sell in the $500 TO $750 range. What are my chances of geting something usable with this kind of budget.

For a trumpet, pretty good, but for a bari sax slightly less good. If you get one with a bunch of lacquer wear on it it'll go MUCH cheaper, and lacquer wear doesn't really affect it beyond looks.

www.saxontheweb.net The forum... This is the premier sax site on the web......You can get all of your questions answered. The membership is very close knit and most often will post their instruments for sale here before listing on eBay. There is also a horns wanted section. Good luck!!!!!!! (I wish it was my retirement party ..
