I am not sure if this is the right group for this topic, but I thought I would start here.

I am considering building my own cables and was wondering if anyone could suggest a good brand and type of cable to buy (like a Belden number) and what a good source for buying the cable would be. I am also interested in XLR connectors as well as TR and TRS jacks.

The cables will be used for microphones and instruments like keyboards and guitars. I would like something flexible.

I know, this topic spurs the whole debate on making cables vs. buying pre-made cables. My opinion is that while I do agree that buying pre-made cables is far cheaper, I am not convinced they are better or even equal in quality to custom made. Also, custom lengths are not available in pre-made. I also agree that someone who does not know what they are doing in making cables can make a much poorer quality cable than pre-made.

Anyway, I would appreciate any input anyone might have. Thanks.

Lou

Mogami or Canari is excellent for mic cabling, I prefer the star quad, doubling up on the conductors myself. Neutrik connectors rock, and are much less in cost than Switchcraft for IMHO the same quality and durability.

I get my cabling and connectors from CBI (http://www.cbicables.com/index.htm)> Good pricing and reliable honest folks.

Thanks for your reply (it is the only one so far!). I downloaded Mogami's catalog and they mention quad cable, but what is star quad?

Also, what is the purpose of "doubling up on the conductors", and how is that done? I have not heard of that before.

From what I have researched, it sounds like the Mogami/Neutrik combination is a good match.

Thanks.

Star quad is essentially single pair mic cable, but instead of a single pair, there are two pairs, but color coded the same, usually blue and white. You double them up, thus doubling the conductivity of the cable.

This guy has it right! Mogami and Canare are excellent...except I would recommend www.toursupply.com
