I love Miles Davis.
Very inspired and inspiring, always in good taste even in unlikely experiments.

While not my #1 favorite player, his greatness is undeniable. As an music innovator, i think his influence is unmatched in modern music...sure he kinda missed the mark with much of the stuff he was doing in the 80's, but his other contributions to jazz (and to a degree pop) music are staggering.

over time (and especially since i stopped playing trumpet as my primary instrumet) i have really grown to love his style and the solo chops over some of the more technical players, past and present.

I like alot of his earlier stuff (So What, Four and More......) but I think he was too "out there" later on in his career. I was never really impressed with his tone either. He often sounded like he needed to utilize his spit-valve more often.

His tone is what keeps me from listening to him a lot. I know its wrong, but I love listening to Miles more when he isn't playing.

See, Dizzy, to me, is the way bebop and jazz trumpet SHOULD sound.

But, its that whole different strokes thing.

Aside from the better and more popular Miles recordings, I've got Miles Davis plays Classic Ballads and Sketches of Spain.

The first one seems thrown together for a quick buck. On one of the tracks, I swear I can hear a door opening/closing in the background (this was a studio recording). The other one (recorded with Gill Evens) just turns me off. It sounds more like music from a bad 50's musical than jazz.

(I wanted to comment about Dizzy but I'll wait for the Dizzy thread! )
